Van Deer SL-JR pro — Review

Overview

The Van Deer SL-JR pro is the junior slalom race ski for U14-U16 racers stepping into FIS-legal geometry. It shares the SL World Cup's shape philosophy — narrow 64-66mm waist and short 8-11m radius — scaled down to 132-152cm lengths.

On-snow performance

The short-radius sidecut hooks quickly into slalom rhythm and rewards clean edge angle. Van Deer softens the layup versus the adult World Cup so lighter riders can bend the ski, but retention on hard snow remains high. Not a free-skiing ski — it lives in the gates.

Construction & specs explained

132cm: 108/64/95, 8m radius, ~1360g. 138cm: 109/65/96, 10m, ~1415g. 148cm: 110/65/97, 11m, ~1555g. 152cm: 110/65/97, 11m, ~1560g. Race-grade sandwich sidewall construction scaled for junior body weight; sintered race base and race-ground edges.

Who it's for & comparisons

Versus the Head WCR e sl rebel team junior it is a purer race build with less all-round softness; versus the adult Van Deer SL it's the junior-length family member; versus the Atomic Redster s7 it is a similar race-oriented junior with different tune personality.

Pros, cons and verdict

Pros

  • Genuine junior race geometry, not a shortened adult.
  • Snappy short-radius turn initiation.
  • World Cup DNA at junior weight.
  • Race-grade base and edges.

Cons

  • Race-only — poor off-piste utility.
  • Short lengths limit dual-use for tall juniors.
  • Requires committed edge input.
  • Race tune needs frequent service.

Verdict: The pick for junior slalom racers ready for World Cup shape at 132-152cm — race DNA, not scaled-down all-mountain.
