Atomic Redster s8 — Review
Who it’s for
Redster S8 Revoshock C is a frontside carver aimed at advanced to expert skiers who love high‑grip, short‑to‑medium turns on groomers. With a 69 mm waist and full camber, it favors clean edge angles over smearing, rewarding a centered, active stance. It feels like a refined consumer slalom ski: lively and precise, yet more accessible than a true FIS stick. If your day is mostly corduroy, morning hardpack, or refrozen lanes, this ski shines. It is less at home in deep chop or fresh snow, but as a piste specialist it’s confident and efficient.
On‑snow feel and stability
On snow, the standout is calm, connected edge feel. Revoshock C plates mute vibration without deadening the ski, so you get a quiet platform that still pops from turn to turn. Active Camber keeps more effective edge on the snow, which helps bite on ice and polish. The shovel engages predictably and the tail finishes cleanly, making it easy to lock into a carve early. It prefers to be driven—if you backseat it, the tail can feel assertive—but stay stacked over the middle and it delivers reassuring stability at the speeds most people ski on piste.
Turn shape and energy
Turn initiation is quick and precise, aided by the narrow waist and sub‑14 m stated radii by length. It loves slalom‑sized arcs and will tighten or open turns with ankle pressure. Energy return is lively rather than explosive, making it less punishing than some race‑room weapons. Compared with Supershape e‑Original or Hero Elite ST TI, the S8 feels slightly softer and more forgiving, with excellent dampness for its class. It will make medium turns happily, but if your day is mostly GS speeds, look elsewhere. In zipper‑line bumps or heavy chop, the stout tail can feel demanding.
Construction and specs explained
Key specs explain the feel. Active Camber 0/100/0 means full camber—maximum edge contact for grip and precision, less ease in soft snow. Dimensions vary by length (tip 108.5–113 mm, waist 69 mm, tail 97–100.5 mm), giving a quick edge‑to‑edge platform. Stated turn radii run 11.7–13.8 m (148–169 cm), matching its short‑turn intent. The Power Woodcore with a TI Powered layer balances stability and rebound without excessive weight. Revoshock C acts like segmented dampers to quell chatter. Dura Cap Sidewall improves power transfer and durability, and the World Cup base finish helps glide. Weight around 2960 g per ski feels solid.
Sizing, setup, and alternatives
Choose length by intent and mass: most skiers will land on 155 or 162 cm for snappy carving; lighter or very technical riders can pick 148; heavier or faster skiers should consider 169 for more platform. Many packages come with I/X 12 GW bindings—set DIN appropriately and keep the tune fresh (a 1° base/3° side edge works well). Buy this if carving clean, high‑grip arcs on groomers is your priority. Skip it if you want off‑piste versatility or maximum forgiveness. Consider Supershape e‑Original, S/Race SL Rush, or Deacon 74 as alternatives depending on your preferences.
