Overview
The Stance W 84 is the mid-width women's ski in Salomon's Stance all-mountain line. For 26-27 it returns as a carryover with the same construction, shape and profile, and Salomon sells it as a set with either the M10 GW or the M11 GW binding. Salomon calls it "energetic yet stable" and the women's ski "that will take you anywhere on the mountain". Compared to the Stance W 80, it adds 4 mm underfoot and switches to a lighter Karuba/poplar woodcore, while keeping the single titanal layer and the Ti-C Frame. Lengths are 151, 159, 167 and 175 cm.
On-snow performance
On paper the Stance W 84 is a frontside-oriented all-mountain ski with some room for soft snow. Radii of 12 m at 151 cm, 13 m at 159 cm, 15 m at 167 cm and 16 m at 175 cm favour short to medium turns, with the longer lengths opening up into wider arcs. The All-Mountain profile — about 15% tip rocker, camber underfoot and 12% tail rocker — makes it easy to start and finish a turn, while the camber gives grip on firm snow. Salomon credits the titanal with a boost through crud and on icy groomers, and the progressive frontside sidecut with lively, controllable turns. Because the metal is concentrated underfoot rather than running tip to tail, the ski should feel lively and forgiving rather than heavy and locked-in. The 84 mm waist gives a bit more support in soft snow and leftover powder at the side of the run than the W 80, but this is still a ski that spends most of its time on groomers.
Construction & specs explained
The core blends Karuba and poplar: poplar for liveliness and damping, Karuba to keep weight down. Single Ti places one titanal layer directly above the core for edge grip and energy transfer. The Ti-C Frame leaves that titanal visible underfoot and extends it with two carbon windows in the tip and tail, which help release torsional forces and make the ski easier to steer. Full sandwich sidewalls carry power to the edges, and the base is sintered. Dimensions are 120/84/103 mm at 151 cm, 121/84/104 at 159, 122/84/105 at 167 and 123/84/106 mm at 175 cm. The listed weight is about 1650 g per ski at 167 cm. The ski is made in Austria. The M10 GW binding has a DIN range of 3-10; the M11 GW version goes to 3.5-11. Both accept GripWalk soles.
Who it's for & comparisons
It suits intermediate to advanced women who ski mostly on piste but want more versatility than a pure carver. The unisex Salomon Stance 84 follows the same idea in longer lengths for taller and heavier skiers. The narrower Salomon Stance w 80 has a poplar-only core, tighter radii and a 141 cm length, and is more piste-focused. The Volkl Mantra 84 w uses a Tailored Titanal Frame and a wider 129 mm tip at 156 cm for a more powerful feel. The Blizzard Black Pearl 84 also uses a single titanal inlay, weighs 1590 g at 164 cm and spans 146 to 176 cm. The Nordica Santa ana 84 is lighter (1515 g at 165 cm) and offers a 144 cm length for smaller skiers.
Pros, cons and verdict
Pros
- Lively Karuba/poplar core with a single titanal layer for grip.
- Short to medium radii (12-16 m) make turns easy.
- The 84 mm waist adds versatility over narrower piste skis.
- Choice of M10 GW or M11 GW binding in a ready-to-ski set.
Cons
- No length below 151 cm for smaller or lighter skiers.
- Partial titanal gives less high-speed stability than full-metal skis.
- Still mainly a groomer ski; float in deep snow is limited.
- Strong experts who push hard may want a stiffer, full-metal ski.
Verdict: The Stance W 84 is a well-rounded women's all-mountain set: a light wood core, a single titanal layer and moderate radii make it easy and stable on piste, with some range beyond it. It is the logical step up from the W 80 for skiers who want more versatility.
