Blizzard Black Pearl 84 — Review

Overview

The Black Pearl 84 is the narrowest entry in Blizzard's defining women's all-mountain line. 84 mm under foot, 14 m radius at 170 cm, 1,590 g per ski at 164 cm. Built around the W.S.D. Trueblend All-Mountain Woodcore (Beech with seven stringers of Poplar, tuned per length for women's biomechanics) plus the Fluxform Single Titanal Inlay. Positioned by Blizzard as the right Black Pearl for beginners progressing into early-intermediate territory who want a single titanal layer for stability without the demand of fully metal-charged all-mountain skis.

On-snow performance

On firm groomers the Black Pearl 84 is the most piste-leaning member of the line — the single Fluxform titanal gives genuine edge engagement, the camber underfoot keeps it from feeling washy, and the 14 m radius at 170 cm is honest for medium-radius turns. The rocker-camber-rocker profile makes initiation friendly without giving up grip mid-arc. Where it shows its entry-intermediate target is at speed: push it past green/blue tempo on hard refreeze and the single-titanal construction gives less feedback than wider Black Pearls or the unisex Anomaly line. But within its design envelope it is one of the most confidence-building 84 mm women's carvers available.

Construction & specs explained

W.S.D. Trueblend All-Mountain Woodcore (Beech with seven Poplar stringers tuned per length). W.S.D. Fluxform Single Titanal Inlay (three women-specific titanal pieces for stability). Rocker – Camber – Rocker profile with early rise tip and tail. Full ABS Factory Base Edge 0.9° / Side Edge 87.5°. Lengths 146 / 152 / 158 / 164 / 170 / 176 cm. Per-length sidecut radius scales 11-16.5 m (152 = 11 m / 164 = ~13 m / 170 = 14 m). Measured 1,590 g per ski at 164 cm. Sidecut 124.5-84-107.5 mm at 164 cm.

Who it's for & comparisons

Wider stablemates in the same line: the Blizzard Black Pearl 88 (the line's all-mountain centerpiece) and the Blizzard Black Pearl 94 (wider women's all-mountain). For more aggressive women's freeride feel see the Blizzard Sheeva 9. Cross-shop, the Volkl Mantra 84 w is the German rival at the same width; the Nordica Santa ana 87 is the Italian women's benchmark in this class; the Atomic Maven 84 is the Austrian entry-intermediate alternative.

Pros, cons and verdict

Pros

  • Single Fluxform titanal gives entry-level skiers real edge engagement.
  • Trueblend WSD core balances forgiveness and stability across the length range.
  • Six-length range (146-176 cm) covers a very wide spectrum of female skiers.
  • Rocker-camber-rocker profile makes initiation friendly without losing mid-arc grip.
  • Boutique brand quality at a generally accessible price for the segment.

Cons

  • Limited at speed — chatters past blue-run pace on hard refreeze.
  • 84 mm is firmly piste-leaning — soft snow is courtesy at best.
  • Single-titanal construction less stable than double-metal women's carvers.
  • Skill demand caps the ski at intermediate level — strong skiers will outpace it.
  • Boutique pricing relative to mainstream entry women's 84s.

Verdict: The right Black Pearl for women progressing from learner skis into early-intermediate territory who want confidence and edge engagement on groomers. Strong intermediates and above should look at the Black Pearl 88 or 94.
