Overview

The Mindbender 88 W is the narrowest women's ski in K2's 26-27 Mindbender collection and the successor to the Mindbender 89Ti W. K2 pitches it as a women's all-mountain ski for carving and speed, and lists it under all-mountain, piste and freeride. The shape is 129-88-113 mm, with a 13.0 m radius and 1585 g per ski at 164 cm (product weight, no plate), in four lengths from 146 to 164 cm. It runs on the new Mindbender platform: Aspen Paulownia core, Titanal I-Beam, Dark Matter Technology and All-Terrain Rocker. K2 rates it for intermediate and advanced skiers, one step more approachable than the 96 W and 101 W, and sells it flat.

On-snow performance

On paper this is the piste-first ski of the women's Mindbender line. A 13 m radius at 164 cm is short for an 88 mm ski, so the shape suggests quick, round turns on groomers, and the 113 mm tail is narrower than the unisex Mindbender 88's, which should help it release at the end of the turn. All-Terrain Rocker puts a gradual rocker in the tip over camber underfoot, so turn entry should be easy while the edge stays in contact on hard snow. The Titanal I-Beam, a central metal laminate rather than a full sheet, points to torsional grip and stability at speed, and K2 says the Dark Matter inserts, TPU weighted with powdered stainless steel at the Enhanced Stability Points, are there to damp vibration on firm snow. The 88 mm waist leaves room for soft snow next to the piste and cut-up off-piste, but it will not float like the wider Mindbenders. Compared with the outgoing 89Ti W, which our catalog lists at 1756 g in 164 cm, the new ski is around 170 g lighter per ski at the same length.

Construction & specs explained

  • Core: Aspen Paulownia, aspen for stability and snap, paulownia to save weight.
  • Metal: Titanal I-Beam, a central Titanal laminate for torsional stiffness and power transfer.
  • Damping: Dark Matter Technology, injected TPU inserts weighted with powdered stainless steel at Enhanced Stability Points, which reinforce high-load zones for edge grip and torsional control.
  • Profile: All-Terrain Rocker, gradual tip rocker blended with camber underfoot.
  • Dimensions: 129-88-113 mm at 164 cm.
  • Radius: 13.0 m at 164 cm.
  • Weight: 1585 g per ski at 164 cm, without plate.
  • Lengths: 146, 152, 158 and 164 cm. Flat ski, binding not included.

Who it's for & comparisons

The 88 W is for intermediate and advanced women who spend most days on the piste but want a ski that does not panic when they leave it. Inside K2's range, the Mindbender 96 W is the wider all-rounder and the K2 Mindbender 101 w the freeride choice; skiers who need more than 164 cm can look at the unisex K2 Mindbender 88, which keeps the 88 mm waist with a wider 116 mm tail and runs from 164 to 182 cm. Against rivals, the Kästle Sublime 88 W has the same waist and a 13 m radius at 166 cm and is a premium, precise piste partner; the Head Kore 87 Ti W is a close match in weight at 1685 g in 170 cm; and the Volkl Mantra 88 w at 1710 g in 163 cm is the heavier, more demanding option.

Pros, cons and verdict

Pros

  • 13 m radius at 164 cm suits quick, round turns on groomers.
  • Titanal I-Beam and Dark Matter give grip and damping on firm snow.
  • Around 170 g per ski lighter than the outgoing 89Ti W at 164 cm.
  • K2 targets intermediate and advanced skiers, so it is approachable.

Cons

  • The longest length is 164 cm, short for tall women.
  • An 88 mm waist gives limited float in deep snow.
  • Less suited to experts who want a stiff, high-speed charger.
  • Flat ski, so budget for a binding and mounting.

Verdict: The Mindbender 88 W is K2's women's piste all-rounder: a short radius, Titanal grip and Dark Matter damping in a lighter package than the 89Ti W. Choose the 96 W if you spend more time off the groomers.
