Overview
The Mindbender 96 W is the women's all-mountain ski in K2's 26-27 Mindbender collection and the successor to the Mindbender 96C W. It uses the 135-96-123 mm shape of the unisex Mindbender 96, offered in five women's lengths from 153 to 173 cm, and K2 lists a 16.0 m radius and 1630 g per ski at 168 cm (product weight, no plate). The bigger change is the build. Where the 96C W used fibre reinforcement and no metal, the 96 W moves to the new Mindbender platform: Aspen Paulownia core, Titanal I-Beam, Dark Matter Technology and All-Terrain Rocker. K2 rates it for intermediate, advanced and expert skiers, places it in all-mountain and freeride, and sells it flat.
On-snow performance
On paper the 96 W is the middle ski of the women's Mindbender line: wide enough for soft snow and cut-up off-piste, narrow enough to stay quick from edge to edge on groomers. A 16 m radius at 168 cm points to medium turns. The gradual tip rocker of K2's All-Terrain Rocker should lift the shovel in soft snow and make turn entry easy, while camber underfoot keeps the edge engaged on firm pistes. The Titanal I-Beam is a central laminate rather than a full sheet, so the construction suggests more torsional grip and more calm at speed than a metal-free ski, without the swing weight of a two-sheet build. Dark Matter inserts, TPU weighted with powdered stainless steel at K2's Enhanced Stability Points, target chatter on hard and broken snow. At 1630 g per ski in 168 cm it weighs the same as the outgoing 96C W did in 166 cm, so the metal comes without a weight penalty. It will not be as loose as a light freeride twin in tight trees, but the shape suggests a forgiving, versatile ski for women who mix piste and off-piste in one day.
Construction & specs explained
- Core: Aspen Paulownia, aspen for stability and snap, paulownia to save weight.
- Metal: Titanal I-Beam, a central Titanal laminate for torsional stiffness and power transfer.

- Profile: All-Terrain Rocker, gradual tip rocker blended with camber underfoot.
- Dimensions: 135-96-123 mm (K2 lists one sidecut without a per-length breakdown).
- Radius: 16.0 m at 168 cm.
- Weight: 1630 g per ski at 168 cm, without plate.
- Lengths: 153, 158, 163, 168 and 173 cm. Flat ski, binding not included.
Who it's for & comparisons
The 96 W is for intermediate to expert women who want one ski for the whole mountain with a lean towards soft snow. Inside K2's range it sits between the narrower, more piste-oriented Mindbender 88 W and the K2 Mindbender 101 w, the Titanal freeride option at 1735 g in 171 cm. Skiers who need more than 173 cm can move to the unisex K2 Mindbender 96, which shares the 96 mm waist and runs from 168 to 183 cm. Against rivals, the Blizzard Black Pearl 97 is a close match in width and the heavier, damper choice; the Kästle Sublime 93 W is a little narrower with a 13.7 m radius at 170 cm and a more piste-precise character; and the Nordica Santa ana 98, at 1850 g in 165 cm, suits stronger skiers who want more mass under foot.
Pros, cons and verdict
Pros
- Titanal I-Beam and Dark Matter add grip and calm at the same weight as the old 96C W.
- The 96 mm waist covers groomers, soft snow and mixed off-piste.
- Five women's lengths from 153 to 173 cm.
- K2 rates it from intermediate to expert, so there is room to progress.
Cons
- The longest length is 173 cm; taller skiers need the unisex Mindbender 96.
- Less loose and playful than a lighter freeride twin in tight trees.
- At 1630 g per ski it is not a touring ski.
- Flat ski, so budget for a binding and mounting.
Verdict: The Mindbender 96 W is the all-rounder of K2's women's Mindbender line: Titanal stability and Dark Matter damping in a 96 mm shape that still turns easily. Pick the 88 W for more piste days and the 101 W for more powder days.
