Overview

The Shine SC Carbon is the sportiest ski in Völkl's Shine women's line: a narrow carving ski that Völkl builds "for female skiers who love dynamic carving and fast, clean turns on groomed slopes". It combines a Multilayer Woodcore, a full sidewall with mini cap, a Titanal Band and Völkl's Tailored Carbon Tips with a moderate tip rocker and a slightly widened tip. The sidecut is 125-69-103 mm in all four lengths (148, 153, 158 and 165 cm), with centre radii from 10.2 m to 13.0 m. It is sold as a system ski on the vMotion 3 GW interface with the Marker vMotion 11 TCX Lady binding, and Völkl lists its weight without binding at 1,595 g in the 148 cm.

On-snow performance

Völkl lists groomers, hard snow, piste and race as the ski's terrain and describes it as "super dynamic, precise and exciting", made for "lively power-carving with a light and agile feel". The construction explains that. The hardwood next to the sidewall in the Multilayer Woodcore and the glass layer above the sidewall are there for edge grip on icy slopes, while the lighter wood in the centre keeps weight down. The Titanal Band adds damping without a full metal sheet, and the Tailored Carbon Tips give a light shovel that bites quickly at turn entry. Flat glass under the binding softens the centre, which Völkl says allows variable turns at any speed. With a 10.2-13.0 m centre radius the ski is shaped for short and medium carved turns rather than long GS arcs. Völkl says an advanced skill level helps, but that the ski stays accessible to ambitious carving-focused skiers and moves from edge to edge easily. Off the groomers the 69 mm waist and camber-dominant profile give little float, so it belongs on firm pistes.

Construction & specs explained

  • Core: Multilayer Woodcore, hardwood next to the sidewall for power transmission and edge grip, lighter softwood in the centre for agility and lower weight.
  • Metal: Titanal Band for damping while keeping the ski relatively light.
  • Tip: Tailored Carbon Tips, embroidered carbon fibres placed along the stress lines for a light, precise shovel.
  • Glass: 3D.Glass with folded glass in tip and tail, flat glass under the binding, glass above the sidewall and vertical glass in tip and tail.
  • Sidewall: Full Sidewall / Mini Cap.
  • Profile: Tip Rocker, rise only in the shovel with camber through the middle and tail.
  • Base: P-Tex 2100 sintered, Zebra Structure, Serial Finish.
  • Binding: vMotion 3 GW interface with a pre-mounted plate and the Marker vMotion 11 TCX Lady (90 mm brake).
  • Dimensions: 125-69-103 mm in all lengths. Centre radius: 10.2 m (148), 10.9 m (153), 11.8 m (158), 13.0 m (165).
  • Weight without binding: 1,595 g (148), 1,682 g (153), 1,755 g (158), 1,856 g (165).

Who it's for & comparisons

The Shine SC Carbon is for advanced women, and ambitious intermediates who already carve, who spend their days on groomed slopes and want a precise, energetic short-to-medium-turn ski. In Völkl's range it sits above the Volkl Shine 78, which is wider, has tip and tail rocker and suits mixed snow better. The unisex Volkl Racetiger sc uses a similar recipe of Multilayer Woodcore, titanal stripes and Tailored Carbon Tips with a near-identical radius range, and is the choice for men and for women who want lengths up to 172 cm. Among other women's carvers, the Elan Ace sc7 w is 72 mm underfoot with two titanal layers for a more damped, metal-heavy feel, and the Blizzard Phoenix r14 pro has the same 69 mm waist with double titanal on an FDT race plate for a stiffer, more race-oriented ride.

Pros, cons and verdict

Pros

  • Precise edge grip on hard snow from the woodcore, sidewall and glass layup.
  • Light, quick shovel thanks to the Tailored Carbon Tips.
  • Titanal Band adds calm without the weight of a full metal sheet.
  • Short centre radius for lively short and medium turns.

Cons

  • A piste specialist: 69 mm underfoot gives little float off the groomers.
  • System binding: no choice of binding or mounting position.
  • Only four lengths, up to 165 cm.
  • Asks for good carving technique to get the best out of it.

Verdict: The Völkl Shine SC Carbon is a light, precise women's carving ski for skiers who want energetic short and medium turns on firm groomers. Choose the Shine 78 if you spend more time in mixed snow and value forgiveness over edge grip.
