Sego Cleaver Carve — Review

The Sego Cleaver Carve is a titanal-laden on-piste carving ski hand-built by Sego Ski Co. in Victor, Idaho. It sits in the sweet spot between a dedicated race-room carver and an all-mountain ski: an 88mm waist gives it a touch more platform than a pure slalom stick, yet its 132/88/116 mm sidecut, directional camber and tight-to-medium turn radii keep its heart firmly on the groomers. This is a frontside all-mountain carver that leans hard toward the piste, built for skiers who want to lay trenches on firm snow rather than chase soft snow off the sides of the trail.

On firm groomers the Cleaver Carve rewards a skier who drives it. The double wall-to-wall Titanal layers deliver heavy damping, so the ski stays quiet and planted as speed rises and the surface roughens. Edge grip is powerful and progressive: tip the ski over and it bites, holds, and pulls you through the arc with real energy. The turn radius climbs from a lively 15 m at 165 cm to a longer, faster 19.5 m at 181 cm, so shorter lengths reward quick edge-to-edge slalom-style turns while the 181 asks for more speed and space to open up. The 88mm width and damp build also let it soak up the occasional chopped-up edge of a run without deflecting, though it is happiest carving clean firm snow.

The Cleaver Carve is built around a poplar wood core wrapped in triaxial fiberglass, with two wall-to-wall layers of Titanal — the metal that defines its character. That double-metal sandwich is what gives the ski its damping and its powerful, unwavering grip on hard snow. VDS rubber foil adds further vibration damping between layers, and a sintered base holds wax and runs fast. Directional camber underfoot keeps the ski locked to the snow through the turn. Weights are 1700 g/ski at 165 cm, 1800 g at 171 cm and 1950 g at 181 cm; turn radius runs 15 m (165), 17 m (171) and 19.5 m (181). Lengths offered are 165, 171 and 181 cm.

This is a ski for the strong, piste-focused skier who values grip and stability over agility and float. If you spend your days linking hard, fast arcs on groomers and want a hand-built metal carver with a little extra width, the Cleaver Carve fits.
