Sego Cleaver S — Review

The Sego Cleaver S is a purpose-built slalom carver, hand-made by Sego Ski Co. in Victor, Idaho. The "S" stands for Slalom, and everything about this ski is aimed at one thing: cutting precise, short-radius arcs on firm groomers and race courses. With a narrow 65mm waist, a short 12-13m turn radius and a directional camber profile, it is an unapologetic hardpack specialist. This is not a do-everything ski, and it was never meant to be. It is a dedicated on-piste carving tool for skiers who love the feeling of a ski that grips like it is on rails and rebounds hard out of every turn.

On firm snow the Cleaver S is razor-sharp and quick edge-to-edge. The 65mm waist gets the ski from edge to edge almost instantly, and the short 12m radius (at 157cm) means it wants to turn the moment you tip it. Two wall-to-wall layers of Titanal make the ski remarkably damp and calm underfoot, filtering out chatter and holding an edge on ice and scraped-off hardpack where lighter skis wash out. That same double-Titanal layup gives the ski a strong, energetic pop when you drive it hard through the arc. It rewards precise, aggressive technique: stay forward, load the shovel, and it snaps you into the next turn. Ski it lazily and you will feel it demand more. At very high speed the short, quick radius can feel a touch nervous for some skiers who prefer a longer, more stable turn shape, but within its slalom-carving mission it is superbly composed and grippy.

The Cleaver S is built around a poplar wood core wrapped in triaxial fiberglass, with two wall-to-wall layers of Titanal for damping and edge power, VDS rubber to further absorb vibration, and a sintered base that holds wax and glides well on firm snow. The directional camber profile is a dedicated on-piste carving shape with no rocker to compromise edge contact. Sidecut runs 115/65/102mm at 157cm and 118/65/104mm at 165cm. Weights are 1525g per ski at 157cm and 1650g at 165cm, and turn radius is 12m at 157cm and 13m at 165cm. Lengths offered are 157 and 165cm — short, quick sizing that matches the ski's slalom intent.

The Cleaver S is for advanced and expert piste skiers who spend their days on groomers and want maximum edge grip and quickness.
