Kästle MX74 — Review

The MX74 is the narrowest, most piste-leaning member of the Kästle MX line. With a 74 mm waist, 11.3 m radius and the Infinity Core AMTN wood block sandwiched between two full titanal sheets, it is essentially a race ski with a few mm of extra width and a slightly more forgiving rise profile. The intent is clear: hard groomers first, mixed snow on the way back to the lift second.

Locked on edge the MX74 carves like the race tools it shares construction with. The double titanal layout plus Full Race Sidewall hold an edge through afternoon refreeze that washes out softer 74 mm carvers. The 11.3 m sidecut keeps the turn short and the Classic Rise tip transitions calmly enough to let it slide a bit when needed. It is not, however, a forgiving ski — the stance has to stay forward to keep the shovel engaged or the tip lifts and the ski drifts wide.

Sandwich construction with a Full Race Sidewall. Infinity Core AMTN — poplar and beech — between two full titanal layers. Hollowtech Evo forebody. Fast Grip shovel and tail with Classic Rise. Closest internal sibling is the Kästle RX11 — narrower and more race-focused. Cross-shop, the Volkl Racetiger MC is the German all-mountain-piste rival at 76 mm; the Stockli Laser sx is the Swiss equivalent boutique build. The Blizzard Thunderbird r15-76 is the most directly comparable mainstream pick — a race-construction 76 mm with similar Italian race DNA.

• Classic Rise is friendlier than a race tip but still narrow for true mixed-snow days.

Verdict: If you want a true frontside carver that can dip a toe in side-piste and chop without breaking, the MX74 is one of the most race-faithful builds at this width for 26/27. Pair it with the RX11 if your fleet doesn't already include a dedicated race ski.
