Sego Condor 116 — Review

The Sego Condor 116 is the widest bird in Sego Ski Co.'s hand-built flock, assembled in Victor, Idaho at the foot of the Tetons. It is a directional big-mountain powder charger built around a 116mm waist, a 140/116/130 mm sidecut and a deliberately very long turn radius that runs from 24m at 175cm to 30m at 192cm. This is a ski with a clear point of view: it wants deep snow, open terrain and speed, and it rewards riders who commit to big, fast lines rather than short, fiddly ones.

Available in 175, 181, 187 and 192cm, the Condor 116 pairs directional camber with early-rise tip and tail. That profile keeps the shovel floating and forgiving in variable snow while preserving enough underfoot camber for edge hold when the surface firms up between powder fields.

On deep, chopped and wind-buffed snow the Condor 116 is in its element. The 116mm platform planes early, and the long radius encourages the kind of drawn-out, high-speed arcs that big faces are made for. Push it into a fast, open turn and it stays planted and calm; the balsa-and-Titanal layup damps chatter and lets you drive the shovel through crud without deflection.

The flip side is that this is a specialist. That 24-30m radius and 116mm waist feel deliberate and slightly ponderous at low speed, and threading tight trees or nervous, narrow chutes asks more effort than a shorter-radius ski would. Give it room and pace, though, and the Condor rewards you with unusual composure on the exact terrain most skis get flustered by.

Under the topsheet sits a poplar wood core with balsa inserts in the tip and tail to shed swing weight, plus a Titanal stringer that adds torsional stiffness and calm at speed. Triaxial fiberglass and biaxial carbon fiber wrap the core for a blend of stability and lively energy, while a 1.4mm Durasurf 4001 sintered base and 2.2mm edges handle abrasive, variable big-mountain snow.

Weights are moderate for the class: roughly 1910g per ski at 175cm, 1950g at 181cm, 2050g at 187cm and 2200g at 192cm. That balsa-and-carbon recipe keeps the Condor light enough that it can double as an occasional touring ski, even though its heart lives on the resort's steep, open faces.

The Condor 116 suits strong, aggressive skiers who spend their best days in deep snow and open big-mountain terrain and who like to go fast. If you ski mostly tight trees or firm groomers, look elsewhere.

Against the Black crows Anima it trades some all-mountain versatility for a longer, more committed radius. The K2 Mindbender 116c mens and Nordica Enforcer 110 free are more playful, shorter-radius alternatives if you want a ski that turns more willingly. In Sego's own range, the Sego Condor 108 is the narrower, more everyday sibling, while the Sego Comp 118 is a shorter-radius charger for tighter, more varied lines.

For strong skiers who chase big, fast faces, it is a compelling and characterful choice.
