Praxis Protest — Review

The Praxis Protest is a wide, directional-twin powder ski built by hand at Praxis's Sierra Nevada workshop near Lake Tahoe. Like all Praxis skis it is sold by flex number and can be custom-ordered, but its core identity is clear: a 128mm-waisted (119mm in the shortest 163 length) big-mountain float machine designed for deep and chopped snow. With near-flat camber, generous tip and tail rocker and a long turn radius, the Protest is unapologetically a specialist. It wants soft snow, open terrain and a rider who likes to surf, slash and smear rather than lay down railroad-track carves.

In deep snow the Protest is effortless. The 128mm platform and near-zero camber (just 3mm underfoot) plane instantly, and the long rocker lets the tips and tails release so the ski feels shorter and more playful than its dimensions suggest. That combination makes smearing, slashing and pivoting feel natural, and the directional-twin shape lets you ride switch out of a landing or drop into a slush turn without drama. In chopped-up, tracked-out powder the width and rocker plow through debris and keep you floating over crud that would deflect a narrower ski.

The trade-off is on-piste behaviour. A 128mm waist with almost no camber is not built for firm groomers or hardpack, and the Protest feels imprecise and vague on edge there. The long per-length radius (25m at 163 up to 32m at 196) reinforces this: the ski wants big, open, high-speed powder arcs, and it can feel clumsy when you try to thread tight trees or link short turns. This is a tool for a specific job, and asking it to carve firm snow works against everything it was designed to do.

Each Protest is hand-made in Tahoe with a maple, ash and aspen wood core and Praxis's "Enduro" construction, topped with an ambrosia-maple veneer that makes every ski visually unique. Waist runs 128mm across the range (119mm on the 163). Per-length sidecut is 130/119/123 (163) and 139/128/132 for the 177, 187, 192 and 196. Turn radius steps from 25m (163) to 28m (177), 30m (187), 31m (192) and 32m (196). Weights per ski are roughly 1700g (163), 2110g (177), 2270g (187), 2340g (192) and 2430g (196). Lengths offered are 163, 177, 187, 192 and 196cm. These are substantial skis, and the weight reflects a build meant for stability at speed, not lightweight touring.

The Protest suits confident powder skiers who ski resort and slackcountry deep days and want a surfy, forgiving ride over a stiff charger. If you want a narrower, more all-mountain-friendly Praxis, the Praxis GPO is the natural sibling. Buy it as a dedicated deep-snow ski, and pair it with something narrower for everything else.
