Kästle Transcend 98 — Review

The Transcend 98 is the narrowest member of Kästle's true freeride line. At 97 mm under foot with a 14.3 m radius, Twin Rocker profile and Hook Free both ends, it sits firmly in one-quiver freeride territory rather than the all-mountain piste-leaning bracket of the Sublime line. The construction is meaningfully different from the Sublime: Powerzone Titanal (localized rather than full sheets) keeps the weight down to 1,450 g per ski at 175 cm — roughly 320 g less than the Sublime 93 at similar width.

On firm groomers the Transcend 98 is the lightest, lowest-effort wide ski in the Kästle catalog. The 14.3 m sidecut still hooks up cleanly when you load the edge, but the Twin Rocker and Hook Free shovel make initiation forgiving rather than aggressive. The real reason to pick this ski is what happens off-trail: at 1,450 g it pivots easily in tight trees, the rocker keeps it on top of light fresh, and the Hook Free tail releases smoothly when the snow turns chunky. It is not a hard-charger — push it through dense chop at speed and it will move around more than a heavier 98 — but as a one-quiver freeride tool it is unusually friendly.
