Elan Primetime 22 — Review

The Elan Primetime 22 is the entry rung of Elan's Primetime carving system, aimed at intermediates stepping up from rental shapes onto their first real piste ski. The 73 mm waist with a 127 mm shovel and 111 mm tail produces short, manageable turn radii (10.1 m at 151 cm, 14.7 m at 179 cm) and the Amphibio profile pairs a rockered outside edge with a cambered inside edge so the ski releases easily but bites cleanly when set on edge. A single Mono Ti layer over a Power Woodcore keeps the chassis lively without making it intimidating, and the Shift X plate with EL 10 or Protector SHIFT 10 binding (DIN 3–10) sets up a ski that asks little of the skier early in the carve. Black and blue colorways exist; the spec sheets are identical across every published field so we treat them as one ski.

On groomed snow the Primetime 22 is forgiving and predictable. The 10–14 m radius range encourages tight, energetic short turns at moderate speed; longer sweeping turns work too, but the ski prefers to load and release rather than rail at high velocity. Edge engagement is positive without being demanding — the Amphibio outside-edge rocker means that if a turn entry is rushed or the angles are imperfect, the tip releases instead of hooking, which is exactly what mid-level skiers need while they build confidence. As speed climbs the single titanal layer starts to feel limited and there is a softness through the tail in choppy snow that more aggressive skiers will notice. Off-piste capability is incidental: the 73 mm waist, sharp sidecut and stiff plate are not designed for variable snow, and freestyle is not on the menu.

The Primetime 22 uses Elan's Power Woodcore (a dual-density wood layup) with full RST sidewalls (Racing Sidewall Technology) for power transfer to the edge. Reinforcement is a single Mono Ti titanal sheet — Elan positions this as enough metal for grip and rebound without the demanding feel of a full Dual Ti race construction. The Amphibio profile is asymmetric: the outside edge of each ski is rockered for release, the inside edge is cambered for grip, which is why Elan ships dedicated left and right skis rather than mirrored pairs. The Shift X integrated plate carries either an EL 10.0 GW or a Protector SHIFT 10.0 GW binding with DIN 3–10. The Sintered High Speed Gliding base finishes the package. Lengths: 151, 158, 165, 172, 179 cm.

This ski targets intermediates who ski 5–15 days a season on resort piste and want one ski to develop carving technique without overwhelming them. Compared to the Head Supershape e v8 it is similarly forgiving but with a more piste-focused 73 mm platform and a tighter radius; against the Salomon S race sl 10 it is far less demanding and aimed at a lower skill bracket; versus the Head Supershape e magnum the Primetime 22 trades absolute carving precision for ease and an integrated plate that takes mounting decisions out of the equation. If the skier is already railing GS turns at high speed, step up the line to the 33 or 44+ instead.

• System binding choice limits aftermarket flexibility.

Verdict: An honest entry-tier system carver that gives developing skiers a clean, forgiving frontside platform. Step up the Primetime ladder only when speed and edge angle demands have outgrown the Mono Ti chassis.
