Ace sc3 w review
Detailed review of the Elan Ace SC3 W: women's 74 mm carver with Dual Woodcore, Mono Ti and EL 9.0 GW Shift. We cover feel, turns, pros, cons and specs.
Overview
The Ace SC3 W is the women's entry point of Elan's Ace line for 26/27, the ski Elan describes as a "perfect beginner carving ski" built for skiers ready to grow. It is a system ski: the Shift X plate and the EL 9.0 GW Shift binding (DIN 2.5–9) ship with it. The outline is Elan's familiar 122/74/103 mm beginner-to-intermediate shape, identical in all five lengths from 140 to 168 cm, with the radius rising from 10.3 m at 140 cm to 15.4 m at 168 cm. The construction is the real news at this price: a Dual Woodcore with a single Mono Ti layer and a sintered base, the same recipe as the men's SC3 but with the lighter-release EL 9.0 binding and a length run capped at 168 cm.
On-snow performance
On paper the SC3 W is a forgiving carver with a touch more composure than a typical first ski. The Early Rise Rocker lifts the tip early, so turn initiation should feel almost automatic and the ski should release cleanly at the end of the arc. The Mono Ti sheet over the Dual Woodcore is what sets it apart from a plain fibreglass cap ski: the construction suggests less chatter on hard, scraped afternoon pistes and a calmer tip when the speed picks up. The short radii in the 146–152 cm lengths (11.3–12.4 m) favour quick, medium-short turns, which is what most lighter, progressing skiers want; at 168 cm the 15.4 m radius lengthens the arc. With a 74 mm waist and a Full Power Cap build it is a piste ski, and riders report that this class is at its best on groomed snow and in light chop at the edge of the run, not in deep snow or moguls.
Construction & specs explained

- Profile: Early Rise Rocker with camber underfoot.
- Plate and binding: Shift X plate with the EL 9.0 GW Shift binding, DIN 2.5–9, GripWalk compatible.
- Dimensions: 122/74/103 mm in every length; radius 10.3 / 11.3 / 12.4 / 13.9 / 15.4 m for 140 / 146 / 152 / 160 / 168 cm.

Who it's for & comparisons
The SC3 W is for women buying their first own pair and for cautious intermediates who want an easy, confidence-building carver that still has some substance. In Elan's range it takes over from the Elan Element 74 RS w, with the same 122/74/103 outline and radius table plus the new Mono Ti layer. The Elan Ace sc5 w above it moves to a narrower 72 mm race-style outline with RST sidewalls and a Power Woodcore, so it is the sharper, more demanding ski. Outside Elan, the Atomic Cloud c8 and the Salomon S max n8 are the closest women's system carvers in this easy-going class, and the Rossignol Nova 4 ca is the softer, even more beginner-oriented alternative.
Pros, cons and verdict
Pros
- Mono Ti and Dual Woodcore give it more stability than most women's entry carvers.
- Early Rise Rocker and short radii make turn initiation easy.
- Sintered base glides better than the extruded bases common at this level.
- Light-release EL 9.0 GW binding suits lighter and newer skiers.
- Binding and plate included, ready to ski.
Cons
- The system binding limits binding choice and adds weight.
- Length run stops at 168 cm, so taller women have to look at the men's SC3.
- Full Power Cap is less precise than the sidewall build on the SC5 W and up.
- A groomer specialist with little to offer in soft or chopped snow.
Verdict: The Ace SC3 W is a sensible first carving ski for women: the Mono Ti layer and sintered base give a forgiving, easy-turning package real substance. Learn to carve on it, then step up to the Ace SC5 W when you want more bite.
