Armada Antimatter 114 — Review

The Armada Antimatter 114 is the widest ski in the reworked AntiMatter line, a big-mountain and soft-snow tool developed with athlete Max Palm. Where the narrower AntiMatter models lean directional, the 114 is built to float and to smear. On paper it reads as a wide metal freeride ski that keeps a surfy, drifty character rather than chasing pure edge grip. It is powder-and-freeride first, with a playful, slash-happy attitude that sets it apart from stiffer, more locked-in fat skis.

The defining trait here is a shorter radius than the Antimatter 108, which the shape suggests should make a ski this wide feel surprisingly maneuverable and easy to pivot. Expect a loose, drifty feel in soft snow, with strong float from the 114mm platform and generous tip-and-tail rocker that lets the ski slash and smear turns instead of railing them. The partial titanal underfoot should add welcome damping, calming chatter at speed and giving the ski more composure than its playful shape alone would imply. It is a confident performer in powder and open big-mountain terrain, and moderately playful for its class. On firm groomers it is the least at home: the wide waist and soft-snow bias mean piste carving is a compromise, and it asks for a fairly capable pilot rather than rewarding a pure beginner. The Antimatter 114 uses a 100% poplar wood core paired with a full-length AR100 sidewall for edge hold and durability. Its Speedmetal construction runs two partial titanal layers edge-to-edge underfoot, then tapers them fore and aft — the source of the ski's damp yet still lively feel. An All Mountain Edge and a S7 sintered base round out the package. The dimensions are 138/114/132 mm at every length, and it comes in 181, 187 and 193 cm. Turn radius grows with length — 19.5 m at 181, 21 m at 187 and 22.5 m at 193 — but every figure is notably shorter than the 108's, which is what gives it that surfier feel. Weight is verified at 2150 g per ski in the 187; other lengths are unpublished.

This is a ski for confident skiers who want a wide, playful freeride board that still has metal-backed composure. The Nordica Unleashed 114 shares the same waist and a similar playful bent, feeling a touch looser and lighter. The Head Kore 112 Ti is a lighter, more directional metal ski that trades some surfy slash for quickness. And Armada's own Armada Whitewalker 116 is the wider, metal-free powder sibling that floats more but holds less on firm snow.
