For most skiers under 90 kg the HY Free's downhill is excellent — but the gap at the top end is decisive.

Touring: the HY Free is ~375 g/binding lighter

HY Free 13 uphill weight: ~675 g/binding. Duke PT 16 uphill: ~1,050 g/binding (with the alpine toe detached and carried). That ~750 g/pair gap is substantial — and the HY Free's transition is simpler: alpine toe flips out of the way, tech toe takes over, no parts to stash in your pack. The Duke PT requires unscrewing the alpine toe with the included tool, putting it in your bag, and bolting on the touring toe; reverse at the top. For 25+ tour days a year, the HY Free returns weight and time at every transition.

Safety: the Duke PT 16's DIN/TÜV cert is the cleanest distinction

Duke PT 16: DIN/TÜV-certified ISO 5355 in alpine mode. HY Free 13: ATK publishes reference release values but explicitly not TÜV-certified. ATK's release calibration is widely respected — experienced freeriders trust it without hesitation — but for race insurance, guides, or certification-required contexts, only the Duke PT 16 qualifies.

Versatility: tied in alpine mode, both pin-only on tour

Both alpine toes accept ISO 5355 + GripWalk. Both touring toes are pin-only. Both support a one-ski-two-boots workflow in alpine mode, but in practice the HY Free is positioned and used almost exclusively with tech-insert touring boots given its lightweight intent. The Duke PT 16 is more often paired with both boot types.

ATK's all-metal machined construction is benchmark — among the most durable bindings in the lightweight category.
