The 5 best beginner skis of 2026-27
A beginner ski has one job: make turning easy. It must turn at low speed with little effort, forgive a stance that is too far back and stay calm when you catch an edge. Most of these skis are soft and between 70 and 80 mm underfoot, with a short radius and a rockered tip, and almost all of them come with a binding already fitted. We compared every adult 2026-27 beginner and early-intermediate ski in our catalog and picked five, from the ski for your first week to the ski that takes you to intermediate. Pick the one whose "best for" matches where you are now.

Head Discovery 70
Why we picked it
The Discovery 70 is the narrowest and easiest ski in Head's new Discovery line, and the only one Head calls an on-piste ski. A light synthetic core inside Head's Superframe fibreglass wrap keeps it soft, and the Allride Rocker lifts only the tip, so the ski starts a turn with very little input. The radius is short at every length, from 7.9 m at 142 cm to 13.3 m at 177 cm, which helps you make round, slow turns. It comes with the PR 11 GW binding on a pre-mounted plate and weighs 1,450 g per ski at 170 cm.
Not for
Skiers who already make parallel turns on red runs. They will soon want a ski with more grip at speed, such as the Völkl Peregrine XT.

Why we picked it
Dynastar built the Speed 250 for beginners who want to get into carving, and kept it simple: a poplar wood core with one layer of fibreglass in a cap construction, and no metal. A moderate tip rocker with camber underfoot lets the ski pivot easily when you skid a turn, while the edge grips once you put the ski on edge. At about 70 mm underfoot it changes edges quickly. It is sold with the Look Xpress 10 GW binding, which starts at DIN 2.5, and weighs from 1,300 g at 146 cm to 1,700 g at 178 cm per ski.
Not for
Skiers who want to leave the groomed piste. The narrow waist sinks in soft snow, so the Elan Element 78 is a better choice there.

Why we picked it
Völkl describes the Peregrine XT as a ski for ambitious beginners who want to improve their carving. It has a wood core with sidewalls in the middle of the ski, a tip rocker with camber through the middle and tail, and a sintered base. The shape is 124-76-105 mm in every length, with radii from 12.7 m at 154 cm to 17.3 m at 175 cm, so it holds a longer, cleaner turn than the other skis here. It comes on Völkl's vMotion plate with the Marker vMotion 11 GW binding and weighs 1,570 g per ski at 154 cm.
Not for
Skiers in their first week, and short or light skiers: the shortest length is 154 cm. The Head Discovery 70 is easier at the very start.

Why we picked it
The Arcade W 80 is the women's version of the entry ski in Rossignol's Arcade line, with Assist flex, the softest of Rossignol's three flex profiles. A poplar core with fibreglass in a cap construction keeps it light: from 1,100 g at 134 cm to 1,500 g at 166 cm per ski. Tip and tail rocker makes it easy to start a turn and to pivot, and the radius is short at every length, from 8 m to 12 m. Lengths from 134 cm make it one of the few beginner skis that also fits short and light skiers. It is a system ski on Rossignol's Xpress plate.
Not for
Strong or heavy skiers, and anyone who wants to ski fast on icy pistes. The soft cap construction runs out of grip there.

Why we picked it
The Element 78 is the wider version of Elan's entry Element ski, for beginners who also want to ski the soft, chopped-up snow at the side of the piste. The waist grows with length, from 75 mm at 144 cm to 78 mm at 168 and 176 cm. A wood core with fibreglass and no metal keeps the flex easy, and the Early Rise Rocker makes turn entry smooth. Radii run from 10.6 m at 144 cm to 16.9 m at 176 cm. It comes on Elan's Shift X plate with the EL 10.0 GW Shift binding.
Not for
Skiers who want sharp carving on hard pistes. Without metal and with an extruded base, it grips less there than the Völkl Peregrine XT.

How we chose
We started with every adult 2026-27 ski in our catalog with a waist between 60 and 85 mm that our comparison model rates as easy to ski, and removed junior skis. The model scores each ski on seven axes, from piste grip to playfulness and skill level, using the manufacturer specs and construction. From the shortlist we picked five skis that each fit one stage, from your first days to your first red runs, with one ski per brand. Not every pick is sold by a shop we link to; where there is a shop link, you find it under the ski. We did not ski these skis ourselves: this is a comparison of published specs and construction, not hands-on experience. No brand paid to be on this list.
