Van Deer GS pro — Review
Overview
The Van Deer GS Pro is Marcel Hirscher's masters-oriented giant slalom ski — same premium World Cup construction as the GS World Cup but with wider 68 mm waist geometry accessible for ambitious piste skiers and masters racers. Verified sidecut varies per length: 107-68-92 mm at 181 cm (21 m radius, 2390 g), 106-68-91 mm at 185 cm (25 m, 2430 g), 103-68-88 mm at 189 cm (28 m, 2535 g). Construction shares the Pro Series ash-poplar + 2 Titanal recipe.
On-snow performance
At 68 mm with the same ash-poplar + double Titanal race construction as the GS World Cup but a slightly wider waist and slightly shorter radii, the GS Pro is aimed at masters racers and ambitious enthusiasts who want a GS feel without going full FIS. Weights of 2390-2535 g deliver strong damping and stability at high speed on hardpack. On piste it holds an edge at extreme angles and rewards elite fore-aft technique. Off piste is not a use case.
Construction & specs explained
Core: ash-poplar wood with two layers of Titanal — the same World Cup construction as the GS World Cup — plus full ABS sidewalls, race edges. Sidecut varies per length: 107-68-92 at 181, 106-68-91 at 185, 103-68-88 at 189. Radii 21/25/28 m. Weights 2390/2430/2535 g. Three lengths only.
Who it's for & comparisons
Compared to the Van Deer GS world cup the GS Pro is 3 mm wider and more accessible without FIS constraint — masters-oriented rather than pure competition. Against the Augment WC Pro GS it is a similar non-FIS masters race concept. Compared to the Van Deer pro it is GS-shaped rather than a general-purpose piste ski.
Pros, cons and verdict
Pros
- Verified full spec data across all three lengths.
- Same World Cup ash-poplar + double Titanal construction as the GS WC.
- Non-FIS 68 mm waist more accessible than FIS-legal geometry.
- Marcel Hirscher-designed for masters and ambitious piste skiers.
Cons
- 68 mm waist unsuitable for off-piste use.
- Long radii (21-28 m) tedious for short-turn skiing.
- Heavy at 2390-2535 g demands strong fitness.
- Premium boutique pricing.
Verdict: A World Cup-construction GS ski without FIS geometry constraints for masters racers and ambitious piste skiers who want the GS feel in a slightly more accessible package.
