Kästle RX12 SL — Review

The RX12 SL is Kästle's flagship slalom race weapon. Built around the same Infini Core RACE poplar/beech wood block and double titanal laminate as the brand's FIS Factory tooling, it is a tight 11-metre, 68 mm-waisted carver that wants a clean edge angle, a hard surface and a skier who knows how to drive the shovel. It is not a forgiving ski and it is not pretending to be one.

Hooked up on a firm groomer the RX12 SL is unbelievably stable for an 11-metre radius — the Hollowtech Race tip kills chatter at high entry speed, and the double titanal sheets generate the kind of energy at apex that throws the ski cleanly into the next turn. Edge change is sharp rather than smooth; the standard camber with Fast Grip shovel and tail rewards a centred, aggressive stance. Skidding it is awkward by design. On softer afternoon snow grip remains excellent but the ski feels nervous unless you commit fully.

Sandwich sidewall with a full race sidewall. Infini Core RACE wood block — poplar and beech laminated with a carbon-glassfiber wound layer — between two full sheets of titanal. Hollowtech Race forebody removes mass from the tip to cut vibration without giving up edge hold. Armoclad topsheet, metal tip protector, 88° side bevel and 0.6° base bevel from the factory. Lengths run 155 / 160 / 165 / 170 cm; measured weight 1,480 g per ski at 165 cm.

Compared to the Atomic Redster s9 the RX12 SL has a slightly higher-energy, more European feel through edge change. Against the Head Worldcup rebels e sl it is broadly comparable in stiffness but rebounds harder; the Fischer Rc4 worldcup noize sl men is similar in radius but lays into the surface a touch more progressively. The Stockli Laser sl fis is the closest direct cross-shop — both are Alpine boutique race lines with double titanal and a similar price tier.

• Tight 11 m radius restricts use to short, hard arcs.
• Length ceiling of 170 cm rules out taller racers wanting longer turns.
• Premium price tier, even by race-ski standards.
• Nervous and skid-resistant on softer snow.

Verdict: If your weekend is gates, NASTAR or hard-snow short turns at speed and you have the technique to load a true race ski, the RX12 SL is one of the best non-FIS slalom platforms available in 26/27. Anyone outside that brief will be over-skied very quickly.
