Kästle MX88 — Review

The MX88 is Kästle's do-it-all step in the MX line — 88 mm under foot, 14 m radius, full sandwich with double titanal and a 130 mm Early Rise tip. It is built to bridge the gap between a race-feel piste carver and a true all-mountain platform without compromising the firm-snow side. At 1,762 g per ski at 174 cm it is firmly in the heavy-but-stable category that Kästle is known for.

On groomers the MX88 holds an edge like a carver two widths narrower — the double titanal layout transfers leg pressure directly to the edge, and the Hollowtech Evo tip damps the chatter most all-mountain 88s show at speed. The Early Rise shovel makes initiation smoother than a flat tip and lets it ride higher in soft, choppy mid-mountain conditions. Where it shows its mass is when you try to throw it sideways at low speed — it does not pivot freely and the long effective edge punishes slow, lazy turns.

Closest cross-shop is the Head Kore 88 Ti — Austrian rival at the same width, slightly lighter and less race-feel. The Nordica Enforcer 88 is the Italian all-mountain benchmark in this class; the Volkl Mantra 88 and Atomic Maverick 88 cti are the German and Austrian mainstream alternatives. Against any of these the MX88 trades a little playfulness for clearly more piste grip.

Verdict: For strong skiers who want a Kästle all-mountain that still carves like a piste tool, the MX88 is one of the most piste-faithful 88s in the 26/27 lineup. If you do not commit to forward stance and real edge angle it will outwork you.
