Overview

The Worldcup Rebels e-Speed is Head's GS carver for skiers who want race-ski stability without the full Pro package. For 26/27 it comes in the Speed Blue design with a 114 mm tip, 68 mm waist and 99 mm tail in all five lengths (165–185 cm), and a radius that runs from 15.1 m at 165 cm to 19.4 m at 185 cm — 18.2 m at 180 cm. Head's own words: "GS turns are the e-Speed's specialty", and it describes the ski as "more forgiving than a FIS race ski" while still built on race construction. It is sold as a set on a race plate with, by default, the Protector+ FF 14 GW binding.

On-snow performance

Everything in the spec sheet points to long, fast carved turns on firm pistes. The full camber profile (0 % tip rocker, 100 % camber, 0 % tail rocker on head.com) and the 68 mm waist give the ski a long effective edge, and the fir/beech core with an aluminium alloy layer and EMC piezo damping is designed to keep it calm when the surface gets rough at speed. Compared with the e-Speed Pro, the e-Speed swaps the Pro's durable race sidewalls for ABS sidewalls and adds fibreglass to the layup, and it is 3 mm wider underfoot with a 3–4 m shorter radius per length. On paper that makes it the easier ski to bend and to turn at moderate speed, which is what Head means with "initiates turns easily". It remains a heavy, full-camber race carver, though: Head lists 2,460 g per ski at 180 cm without binding, so it rewards a strong, forward stance and is not built for pivoted short turns or soft snow.

Construction & specs explained

  • Core: fir/beech wood core.
  • Metal and glass: high-quality aluminium alloy layer plus fibreglass.
  • Graphene: Head's lightweight reinforcement in the layup.
  • EMC: Energy Management Circuit, ceramic piezo plates front and rear that turn vibration into electrical energy to dampen the ski.
  • Sidewalls: ABS sidewalls, full-length sandwich construction.
  • Base: RD Race Structured UHM C base.
  • Profile: Rebel Camber — 100 % camber, no rocker.
  • Plate and binding: race plate, sold as a set with the Protector+ FF 14 GW (also offered with Protector+ FF ST 16 GW, Freeflex ST 16, Freeflex 14 GW, Freeflex 11 Race or Freeflex 11 GW).
  • Dimensions: 114-68-99 mm in every length.
  • Radius: 15.1 m (165), 16.1 m (170), 17.1 m (175), 18.2 m (180), 19.4 m (185).
  • Weight: 2,460 g per ski at 180 cm, without binding (Head's figure).
  • Lengths: 165, 170, 175, 180, 185 cm.

Who it's for & comparisons

The e-Speed suits advanced to expert piste skiers who carve medium-long to long arcs and want a damp, planted ski rather than a lively one. In Head's own range, the e-Speed Pro is the stiffer, narrower 65 mm version with an 18–22 m radius, the Head worldcup rebels e gsr (68 mm, 11.9–15.7 m) is the tighter GS carver, and the Head Supershape e speed (68 mm, 11.5–16.6 m) is the more versatile Supershape take on the same idea. Outside Head, the closest match is the Salomon Equipe gs 12 (68 mm, 16–18 m, race plate, 2,400–2,480 g per ski with plate); the Atomic Redster g9 (67 mm, 15–18 m) and the Volkl Racetiger gs (67 mm, 15–18 m) are the other recreational GS race carvers to cross-shop.

Pros, cons and verdict

Pros

  • Race construction with fir/beech core, aluminium alloy and EMC damping at a step below the Pro price.
  • Five lengths from 165 to 185 cm with a 15–19 m radius range.
  • 100 % camber and a long effective edge for stability on hard snow.
  • Race plate and Protector+ FF 14 GW binding included in the set.

Cons

  • At 2,460 g per ski (180 cm) it is heavier than the e-Speed Pro, not lighter.
  • A GS specialist: long radius for narrow or busy pistes.
  • No help in soft snow, bumps or at low speed.
  • The set binding limits your choice to Head/Tyrolia race bindings.

Verdict: The e-Speed is the sensible way into Head's Worldcup Rebels GS carving: the same fir/beech core, metal and EMC, a slightly shorter radius and a less demanding flex than the Pro. Strong piste skiers who live for long arcs will be well served; anyone wanting short turns should look at the e-Race or e-SL instead.
