Overview
The Head Discovery 74 sport is the wood-composite Sport version of the 74 mm shape in Head's new 26/27 Discovery family. It uses the same 128/74/109 mm sidecut as the Head Discovery 74 pro, the same Allride Rocker and the same PowerRail system base, but with a wood composite core instead of the Pro's full wood core, and it starts one size shorter at 149 cm. Head rates it Beginner, All Mountain and Medium Speed, with a Short Radius label: 13.0 m at 170 cm and 9.1 m at 149 cm. The standard binding is the PR 11 GW; the PROTECTOR EVO PR 11 GW is optional.
On-snow performance
The construction suggests an easy, confidence-building piste ski with a bit more backbone than a pure beginner model. Head's wood composite core blends wood and composite materials for a lighter, softer feel than full wood; Auxetic Tech means the flex stays natural at slow speeds and firms up only when the skier really starts to carve, so the ski should not punish early mistakes but has somewhere to go as technique improves. The short radii — 9.1 m to 15.0 m across the length run — favour round, frequent turns, and the 15 % tip rocker helps the tip find the turn and ride over cut-up snow. Head's own line is "built for carving clean turns but doesn't shy away from variable terrain": on a 74 mm waist that means groomers first, with enough tip to cope with a few centimetres of fresh snow beside the piste.
Construction & specs explained
Core: wood composite. Superframe construction — a fully wrapped fibreglass structure that increases torsional strength and distributes pressure evenly — surrounds the core, and Auxetic Tech (a structure that expands in width when stretched in length) pushes against the frame so the ski gets stiffer the more it is bent. Graphene is used strategically, the base is UHM C and the inclined Better Balance Base gives the same ramp angle for every boot sole size. The ski ships with the PR 11 GW system binding (TX BTR toe, GripWalk compatible) on a pre-mounted PowerRail base; because the base is PROTECTOR ready, Head's PROTECTOR EVO PR 11 GW with full heel release can be fitted instead. Lengths 149, 156, 163, 170 and 177 cm; sidecut 128/74/109 mm in every length; radius 9.1 / 10.2 / 11.3 / 13.0 / 15.0 m; Head quotes 1610 g per ski without binding at 170 cm. Rocker 15 % tip, 85 % camber.
Who it's for & comparisons
A beginner or early intermediate who already links turns on blue and red pistes, wants a ski that will keep up as they improve, and values Head's safety-binding option. Inside the line, the Head Discovery 74 is the cheaper synthetic-core version of the same shape, while the Head Discovery 74 pro adds the full wood core and a faster, more demanding character. Elsewhere, the Atomic Redster q5 is the obvious rival — a forgiving mid-70s system piste ski for progressing skiers; the Salomon S max 8 is narrower and slightly more carving-oriented; the Elan Wingman 78 c is a wider, equally friendly all-mountain system ski.
Pros, cons and verdict
Pros
- Auxetic Tech gives a soft, forgiving flex that firms up as the skier progresses.
- Short radius (13.0 m at 170 cm) makes round, controlled turns easy.
- Five lengths from 149 to 177 cm cover a wide range of skiers.
- PROTECTOR-ready base; PR 11 GW GripWalk system binding included.
- Wood composite core and Graphene at a Sport-tier price.
Cons
- At 1610 g per ski (170 cm) it is the heaviest Discovery model on Head's figures.
- Soft construction will be outgrown by skiers who start carving at speed.
- System PowerRail base rules out touring bindings and aftermarket choice.
- 74 mm waist limits off-piste use to light, shallow snow.
Verdict: A forgiving, well-equipped progression ski: the Discovery 74 sport makes sense for beginners who want to grow into a real carving ski without paying for the Pro.
