Overview

The Head Discovery 74 pro is the narrowest Pro model in Head's new 26/27 Discovery family and the most piste-leaning of them. Head labels it Advanced, All Mountain and Fast: a 128/74/109 mm sidecut, a full wood core inside the Superframe construction, Auxetic Tech and Graphene, and a PROTECTOR EVO PR 11 GW system binding fitted as standard. The radius is 12.6 m at 170 cm (10.3 m at 156 cm, 13.9 m at 177 cm), which places it between a slalom ski and a frontside carver. At 1400 g per ski it is also the lightest of the Discovery models we compared.

On-snow performance

The spec sheet points to a quick, precise groomer ski. The 74 mm waist flips from edge to edge faster than the 78 and 82 mm Discoverys, the 12.6 m radius pulls the ski into medium-short arcs, and Head's "Fast" speed rating signals a chassis built to be driven rather than cruised. Head describes the full wood core as giving natural strength and responsiveness; the Auxetic layer then stiffens the ski as it is bent, so the harder an advanced skier loads the turn, the more support the ski returns. The 15 % tip rocker is modest — enough for an easy entry and some forgiveness in chopped-up snow — while the 85 % camber keeps the edge working along its full length. Off piste, Head calls it "lightweight and nimble" — fair for a 74 mm ski: fine in a few centimetres of fresh snow at the trail edge, not a powder tool.

Construction & specs explained

Core: full wood core. Head's Superframe construction wraps the core in a fully enclosed fibreglass structure for torsional strength and even pressure distribution; Auxetic Tech — a structure that widens when stretched lengthways — pushes against that frame so the ski gets stiffer the more it flexes. Graphene is placed strategically for strength at low weight, the base is UHM C, and the inclined Better Balance Base gives the same ramp angle for every boot sole size. The ski ships on a pre-mounted PowerRail base with the PROTECTOR EVO PR 11 GW (refined VX toe, BTR kinematics, full heel release — Head claims over 50 % lower ACL strain in a fall); the plain PR 11 GW is the alternative. Lengths 156, 163, 170 and 177 cm; sidecut 128/74/109 mm in all lengths; radius 10.3 / 11.4 / 12.6 / 13.9 m; 1400 g per ski without binding at 170 cm; rocker 15 % tip, 85 % camber.

Who it's for & comparisons

An advanced skier who spends most of the day on groomed runs, likes medium-short turns at a brisk pace, and wants Head's PROTECTOR binding without buying a race ski. In the line, the Head Discovery 78 pro is the same construction with a 13.7 m radius and more width for soft snow — pick the 74 pro if the piste comes first. The Volkl Peregrine 72 is the stiffer, more demanding carving alternative; the Atomic Redster q7 is a comparably quick 75 mm piste ski with a more traditional feel; the Fischer The curv gt 76 matches it on waist and intent and offers a wider length run.

Pros, cons and verdict

Pros

  • Lightest Discovery model at 1400 g per ski (170 cm), yet with a full wood core.
  • 12.6 m radius and 74 mm waist make for quick, precise piste turns.
  • Auxetic Tech adds support progressively as the skier pushes harder.
  • PROTECTOR EVO PR 11 GW binding with full heel release fitted as standard.
  • Graphene and Superframe for torsional strength without bulk.

Cons

  • Only four lengths (156–177 cm); nothing for very tall skiers.
  • Pro price tier — the 74 sport covers the same shape for less.
  • System PowerRail base means no touring bindings and little aftermarket choice.
  • 74 mm waist and 15 % rocker leave little margin in deep or heavy snow.

Verdict: The sharpest, lightest ski in the Discovery range — a piste-first all-mountain ski for advanced skiers who value quick turns and Head's PROTECTOR safety binding.
