Head Absolut Joy — Review

The Head Absolut Joy is the 80 mm all-mountain entry of Head's women's Joy collection. With Better Balance Technology, a Wood Composite Core, Allride Rocker and a Joy 9 GW SLR system binding on Power Rail, it is built as a versatile single-quiver ski for women who want a true all-day ski that crosses between groomers and the soft snow next to the trail.

On corduroy the Absolut Joy carves cleanly without demanding effort. The wood-composite core under foot feels stable enough to commit through a medium-radius turn, the Allride Rocker initiates early, and the 14.8 m radius at 163 cm makes the natural turn shape a flowing mid-length arc. Off-piste the wider 80 mm waist and Better Balance Tech start to pay off — the ski floats more confidently in chopped-up soft snow next to the run, and the slightly forward-ramped stance gives a more natural fore-aft balance for a wider range of pitches. It is not a powder ski, and it is not a sharp carver — its sweet spot is the in-between.

A confident-intermediate to mid-advanced woman skier who wants one ski for varied snow — most days on piste, some side-of-piste, some early-morning chop. Compared to the Elan Lynx 82 w it is heavier and more piste-bound but easier in soft chop. Against the Volkl Rise above 88 w the Absolut Joy is narrower and less off-piste-friendly — pick the Volkl if you ski half on, half off; pick the Absolut Joy if your week skews 70/30 piste-to-snow. Stronger carvers will find the Super Joy more rewarding on hard snow.
