DPS Wailer 100 — Review

The DPS Wailer 100 is a do-everything all-mountain ski built around a lightweight carbon layup. It sits in the 100mm-underfoot category, the width most skiers reach for when they want one ski to handle groomers, chop and the occasional soft-snow day. What sets the Wailer 100 apart is its unusually short turn radius: at the 179cm length its sidecut runs 132 / 100 / 117mm for a 15m radius, which is tight for a ski this wide. The result is a carve-happy, quick-footed personality that feels more energetic than the width suggests.

That short radius is the headline. Edge-to-edge the Wailer 100 is quick and eager, rolling into a carve with little effort and rewarding an active, engaged skier who likes to shape turns. On firm groomers it holds a clean arc and the carbon build snaps out of each turn with plenty of energy. The 40% tip-and-tail rocker with 60% effective edge keeps the contact patch manageable in tighter terrain and adds forgiveness at the ends, while the cambered midsection supplies the grip. In soft snow the 100mm waist and generous rocker let it float acceptably and stay maneuverable, though this is a one-ski all-rounder rather than a dedicated powder tool. It is a directional ski, happiest driving forward, and not intended for switch or park riding.

The Wailer 100 is built on a poplar wood core with carbon-fiber stringers and a carbon laminate top and bottom, which is where its low weight and lively rebound come from: a stated 1880g per ski at 184cm. DPS uses its Super Sap bio-resin, algal-based sidewalls and steel edges, giving the ski a more sustainable material story than a conventional glass-and-petroleum layup. It comes in 163, 171, 179, 184 and 189cm lengths, so most skiers can size to their preferred style. The rocker profile is rocker / camber / rocker.

The Wailer 100 suits an intermediate-to-advanced skier who wants a light, playful, carve-forward all-mountain ski and doesn't need to charge at the very top end. If you want something damper and more planted, the metal-topped Head Kore 100 Ti is the lighter-feeling metal reference, while the Nordica Enforcer 100 is heavier and more composed at speed. For a longer-radius, more directional feel, the K2 Mindbender 99Ti with its Titanal Y-beam is worth a look. Within DPS, the DPS Kaizen 100 shares the shape with a split poplar/ash core and a slightly more demanding layup, and the DPS Wailer 107 adds width for more float.
