Armada Whitewalker 108 — Review

The Armada Whitewalker 108 is a new, narrower and lightweight addition to a line that previously started at 116/121mm. Where those wider sticks were powder-first, this 108 is built as a versatile freeride ski that also happens to make a willing free-tour partner. The pin tip and tail, short radius and low weight give it a loose, surfy character, and on paper it is aimed at the skier who wants one playful board for soft-snow days and mixed off-piste terrain.

The shape suggests a ski that is happy to smear, slash and pivot rather than lock into long GS arcs. The short turn radius and 3D-beveled pin tips should make it quick edge-to-edge and buttery underfoot, rewarding a playful, terrain-reading style over pure speed. In fresh snow the early-rise tip and tail plus the 108mm platform should deliver reliable float without feeling like a dedicated powder ski. On firm groomers it is the least at home: the metal-free build and freeride bias mean it prefers medium-radius, energetic turns to hard-carved trenches. Thanks to the light Caruba and carbon construction it climbs willingly, so it doubles as a capable touring ski, though it stays freeride-first rather than a purpose-built tourer. Freestyle capability is modest but present. Overall it should feel forgiving and fun rather than demanding, suiting confident intermediates through advanced skiers.

The Whitewalker 108 uses a Caruba wood core with AR75 sidewalls and a carbon layer added for lightweight stability — there is no metal or titanal in the layup. Smear Tech shapes the 3D-beveled pin tip and tail for easy release and float, while a Lightweight Edge and the Comp Series Base round out a deliberately low-mass build. It comes in 168, 174, 180 and 186cm. The waist is 108mm, with a 134mm tip and a 129mm tail. The radius is short for the width, from 15.5m on the 168 to 17.5m on the 186, which is why it feels quick and surfy. The verified weight of 1750g per ski (180cm) is light for a 108, underlining its free-tour intent; other lengths are unpublished.

This is a ski for the freeride skier who values playfulness, float and low weight over damp charging. Compared with the Elan Ripstick 108 — a similarly light, playful freeride 108 — the Ripstick is a touch more all-mountain and less tour-minded. The Black diamond Helio carbon 108 is a more tour-focused carbon 108 that climbs better but feels less planted on the descent. And the Armada Whitewalker 116 is the wider, powder-first sibling with more float but less firm-snow bite.
