Volkl Racetiger jr SL — Review

Overview

The Volkl Racetiger jr SL is the junior slalom-class race ski in Volkl's 26 race lineup, tuned for developing athletes from approximately U12 to U14. It pairs a torsionally soft shovel with two layers of full Titanal and a multilayer wood core, with Titanal thickness and wood blend tuned by length to match athlete progression. Pre-mounted Marker JR Race Interface plate is included.

On-snow performance

The Racetiger jr SL initiates turns early thanks to the softer shovel and tip rocker, which suits young athletes learning to drive a slalom binding line. Underfoot the two-layer Titanal construction holds the edge predictably; the shorter mid-body radius rewards quick rhythm and tight gate spacing. As athletes grow into longer lengths, the construction stiffens for more aggressive gate work.

Construction & specs explained

Multilayer wood core, two layers of full Titanal (tuned by length), tip rocker with full sidewalls, Marker JR Race Interface plate pre-mounted. Lengths 122 / 129 / 136 / 143 / 150 cm. Sidewidth and per-length sidecut tuned for slalom racing geometry; Volkl does not publish a unified sidecut for the junior range as each length carries different waist/radius matched to athlete size.

Who it's for & comparisons

U12 to U14 ski racers training slalom. Compared to the Head WCR e sl rebel team junior it shares the same junior-race positioning with brand-specific tuning differences; both are USSA approved. Against the Nordica Dobermann combi pro s (jr 4.5 fdt) the Racetiger jr SL is more slalom-specific while the Dobermann combi pro is a combined GS/SL platform.

Pros, cons and verdict

Pros

  • Length-tuned Titanal and wood blend matches athlete progression.
  • Tip rocker eases turn initiation for developing racers.
  • Marker JR Race Interface plate provides clean power transmission.
  • USSA approved for race competitions.
  • Five lengths cover U12 to U14 development.

Cons

  • Dedicated slalom geometry — no all-mountain utility.
  • Premium price point for a junior race tool.
  • Requires coach-driven mounting and tuning for race use.
  • Plate-mounted system limits future binding flexibility.

Verdict: A serious junior slalom race ski for U12-U14 athletes. The length-tuned construction is the standout feature — buying the right length means the ski's character matches the rider's stage of development. Combine with the Racetiger GS R jr for a complete combi-event setup.
