Overview

The Peregrine XT is the entry point to Völkl's Peregrine piste family for 26/27, now delivered as a system ski with the vMotion 1 GW interface and the Marker vMotion 11 GW binding. Völkl positions it for "ambitious beginners looking to improve their carving technique" and says it closes the gap between the softer Peregrine MT and the sportier models above it. The shape is a modern all-round carver: 124-76-105 mm in every length, with radii of 12.7 m at 154 cm, 14.2 m at 161 cm, 15.7 m at 168 cm and 17.3 m at 175 cm. Völkl lists the bare ski at 1,570 g (2,362 g with the binding), which retailer tables tie to the 154 cm length.

On-snow performance

On paper the XT is built to make carving feel easy rather than fast. The tip rocker lets the shovel engage early and release late, so skidded and carved turns blend without catching, and the 76 mm waist keeps edge changes quick for an all-mountain-width ski. A wood core in Völkl's PU construction gives a steadier flex than the composite-core skis below it, while the Center Sidewall (partial sidewalls under the binding, cap at tip and tail) delivers reasonable grip on firm groomers without the bite of a full-sidewall race carver. The 14-16 m radii in the common lengths suit medium turns and relaxed cruising; the construction suggests it will feel vague if pushed to race-carver speeds, and it is a piste ski first, with the width to cope with chopped snow but no claim on powder.

Construction & specs explained

  • Core: Woodcore, a wooden core in Völkl's PU construction.
  • Sidewall: Center Sidewall, partial sidewalls in the middle of the ski combined with the slim 3D.Ridge construction.
  • Profile: tip rocker, camber from the middle to the tail.
  • Base: P-Tex 2100 sintered base; edge tune 1.4° / 87.6°.
  • Binding: vMotion 1 GW interface, pre-mounted plate, supplied with the Marker vMotion 11 GW (DIN 3-11), GripWalk compatible.
  • Dimensions: 124-76-105 mm in all lengths (154, 161, 168, 175 cm).
  • Radius: 12.7 / 14.2 / 15.7 / 17.3 m.
  • Weight: 1,570 g per ski without binding; 2,362 g with binding (154 cm).

Who it's for & comparisons

The XT suits intermediate skiers who have parallel turns down and want a forgiving ski to learn clean carving on, plus lighter or less aggressive skiers who find the sportier Peregrines too much work. Within Völkl's range, the Volkl Peregrine 76 is the serious big brother: same 76 mm waist but a stiffer, far more demanding build and 16-19 m radii, aimed at strong carvers. The Volkl Peregrine 78 adds width, tip and tail rocker and the Lowride system for a more all-mountain feel at a similar skill level. Outside Völkl, the Atomic Redster q5 (76.5 mm) is the obvious cross-shop in the same easy-carver bracket, the Fischer The curv gt 76 is a step up in grip and demands, and the Salomon S max n8 (72 mm) is a slightly narrower alternative for pure piste use.

Pros, cons and verdict

Pros

  • Wood core and Center Sidewall give more stability than typical entry-level composite skis.
  • Tip rocker and 76 mm waist make turn initiation and edge changes easy.
  • Complete system with the vMotion 11 GW binding, GripWalk ready.
  • Four lengths from 154 to 175 cm cover most body sizes.
  • Attractive price for a wood-core Völkl.

Cons

  • System binding limits binding choice and adds weight (about 2.4 kg per ski with binding).
  • Partial sidewalls cannot match a full-sidewall carver on ice.
  • Strong, fast skiers will outgrow it quickly.
  • No women-specific lengths below 154 cm.

Verdict: The Peregrine XT is a sensible first "real" carving ski: wood core, easy tip rocker and a complete binding package at a fair price. Buy it to learn to carve; move to the Peregrine 76 or 78 when you want more.
