Overview

The Kästle Legend 1968 Wedler is new for 2026/27 and joins the Legend 1956 in Kästle's retro "Legend" series. Kästle says it brings one of its most beautiful skis from the 1960s back to life: a vintage-styled topsheet over a modern carving chassis, produced in strictly limited numbers and handcrafted in the Hohenems manufactory. Under the graphics sits a karuba wood core with double Titanal and carbon, a full race sidewall and Kästle's Hollowtech 2.0 Carbon shovel. The shape is a narrow 120-70-100 mm, the radius runs from 11.1 m at 155 cm to 15.4 m at 179 cm, and Kästle lists 1435 to 1660 g per ski. It is sold flat or with the K12 PRW GW binding.

On-snow performance

On paper this is a pure groomer carver. A 70 mm waist rolls from edge to edge quickly, and the full camber with no rise, plus the Fast Grip shovel and tail, means the whole edge should bite from the first moment of the turn. The name nods to "wedeln", the classic Austrian technique of short, rhythmic turns, and the geometry fits: 12.4 m at 163 cm and 13.8 m at 171 cm put it between a slalom and a giant slalom ski, so short to medium arcs feel natural. Double Titanal and a full race sidewall suggest a calm, damp ride and strong grip on hard-packed and icy pistes; the carbon and Hollowtech 2.0 shovel are there to keep the tip light and lively. With a 70 mm waist and no rocker, soft snow and off-piste are not what it was built for.

  • Radius: 11.1 / 12.4 / 13.8 / 15.4 m (155 / 163 / 171 / 179 cm).

Who it's for & comparisons

The Legend 1968 Wedler is for a good to expert piste skier who wants a precise, metal-reinforced carver and also cares about owning something rare and hand-built. Within Kästle's own range, the Kästle RX11 is the closest performance match: 122-68-104 mm and 11 m at 168 cm, a narrower and more race-shaped ski. The Kästle RX9 is a lighter sport carver at 116-72-98 mm with 12.6 m at 162 cm and 1210 g. Outside Kästle, the Stockli Laser sc is the obvious premium rival, with a near-identical 120-70-102 mm shape and 13.8 m at 164 cm. The wider Kästle Legend 1956 (83 mm) is its all-round sister for skiers who also leave the groomers.

Pros, cons and verdict

Pros

  • Double Titanal, carbon and a full race sidewall for strong grip on hard snow.
  • Full camber with Fast Grip shovel and tail for immediate edge engagement.
  • Scaled radius from 11.1 to 15.4 m, so every length keeps a short-turn character.
  • Handmade in limited numbers with a distinctive 1960s design.

Cons

  • At €1,699 flat or €1,899 with binding, it is priced well above comparable carvers.
  • The 70 mm waist and full camber limit it in soft snow and off-piste.
  • Double Titanal asks for an active, skilled skier to bend it.
  • Limited production means lengths can be hard to find.

Verdict: A hand-built, double-Titanal piste carver with a vintage look and a short-turn shape. Choose it if you ski groomers with good technique and want something rarer than a standard race-room ski.
