Overview

The Ace SC3 is the new entry point of Elan's Ace line for 26/27, the ski Elan itself calls "your first step into the world of carving". It is a system ski: the Shift X plate and the EL 10.0 GW Shift binding (DIN 3–10) come in the box. The geometry is the familiar Elan beginner-to-intermediate outline of 122/74/103 mm across all six lengths from 140 to 176 cm, with the radius climbing from 10.3 m at 140 cm to 17.1 m at 176 cm. What is new for this price point is the build: a Dual Woodcore, a single Mono Ti layer and a sintered base, a package that until now Elan reserved for the Element 74 RS tier and above.

On-snow performance

On paper the SC3 is a forgiving carver with a little more backbone than a typical first ski. The Early Rise Rocker shortens the effective edge at the tip, so turn initiation should feel easy and the ski should release from the arc without hooking. The Mono Ti sheet over the Dual Woodcore is what separates it from a plain fibreglass cap ski: the construction suggests a calmer ride on hard, scraped-off afternoon snow and less tip flutter when the speed picks up. The short radius in the 152–160 cm lengths (12.4–13.9 m) points to quick, medium-short turns rather than long GS arcs; at 176 cm the 17.1 m radius opens the turn up. With a 74 mm waist and a Full Power Cap build this is a piste ski, and riders report that this class of ski is at its best on groomed snow and in light chop at the side of the run, not in deep snow or bumps.

Construction & specs explained

  • Core: Dual Woodcore, two symmetrical wooden stringers in the outer areas for power transmission and edge grip.
  • Reinforcement: Mono Ti, a single titanal layer on the wood core for stability and damping.
  • Construction: Full Power Cap, a light, forgiving cap build.
  • Base: Sintered High Speed Gliding base.
  • Profile: Early Rise Rocker with camber underfoot.
  • Plate and binding: Shift X plate with the EL 10.0 GW Shift binding, DIN 3–10, GripWalk compatible.
  • Dimensions: 122/74/103 mm in every length; radius 10.3 / 11.3 / 12.4 / 13.9 / 15.4 / 17.1 m for 140 / 146 / 152 / 160 / 168 / 176 cm.
  • Weight: Elan does not publish a ski weight.

Who it's for & comparisons

The SC3 is aimed at beginners buying their first own pair and at cautious intermediates who want an easy ski that will not hold them back as they learn to carve. Inside Elan's range it replaces the Elan Element 74 RS, sharing its 122/74/103 outline and radius table but adding the Mono Ti layer. The Elan Ace sc5 above it moves to a narrower 72 mm race-style outline with RST sidewalls and a Power Woodcore, so it is the sharper, more demanding ski. Outside Elan, the Head Supershape e v5 is the closest cross-shop at 74 mm, the Salomon S max 8 is a comparable easy-going system carver, and the Atomic Redster q5 offers a similar progression ski with a slightly wider waist.

Pros, cons and verdict

Pros

  • Mono Ti and Dual Woodcore give it more stability than most entry carvers.
  • Early Rise Rocker and a short radius make turn initiation easy.
  • Sintered base glides better than the extruded bases common at this level.
  • Six lengths from 140 to 176 cm cover a wide range of skiers.
  • Binding and plate included, ready to ski.

Cons

  • The system binding limits binding choice and adds weight.
  • Full Power Cap is less precise than the sidewall build on the SC5 and up.
  • A groomer specialist with little to offer in soft or chopped snow.
  • Strong intermediates will outgrow it within a season or two.

Verdict: The Ace SC3 is a sensible first carving ski: the Mono Ti layer and sintered base add real substance to a forgiving, easy-turning package. Buy it to learn to carve; step up to the Ace SC5 once you want more bite.
