Speed omeglass master sl r22 review
Detailed review of the Dynastar Speed Omeglass Master SL R22: beech core, two titanal sheets, full sidewalls, R22 plate. Feel, turns, pros, cons and specs.
Overview
The Speed Omeglass Master SL R22 is the new masters-level slalom ski in Dynastar's 26/27 race line, sitting between the recreational Speed carvers and the FIS-homologated Omeglass WC SL Factory. "Omeglass" is Dynastar's slalom race name; the giant slalom skis are called Speed Course. The geometry is a pure SL shape: 116-69-103 mm at every length, with the radius growing from 12 m at 155 cm through 13 m (165) and 14 m (170) to 15 m at 175 cm. It ships on the R22 race plate without bindings; Dynastar lists the Look SPX 12 Rockerace GW and SPX 15 Rockerace as the compatible options.
On-snow performance
On paper this is a slalom ski first and a carver second. The full-camber profile and two titanal sheets give it the backbone to hold a high edge angle on injected or icy pistes, and the 12–15 m radius means it wants to be rolled from edge to edge in quick, round arcs. Dynastar's own pitch is a "powerful edge and agile feel", attributing the light swing weight to the beech core combined with the full Ti layer, so the construction suggests less of a locked-in, dead feel than a FIS slalom ski and a ski that can be opened up between gates or on an empty morning piste. The R22 plate lifts the boot for leverage and quicker edge changes, but it also adds weight and demands a committed, forward stance: at slow speed or with a lazy, skidded technique a ski like this feels stiff and unforgiving. Soft snow, bumps and anything off the groomer are not its purpose.
Construction & specs explained
- Core: PEFC-certified beech, 710 g/m³. Dynastar describes its hardness, elasticity and strength as very close to ash.
- Metal: Full Titanal Layer, two full-width, full-length titanal sheets, one on each side of the core.
- Sidewall: Sandwich Full Sidewall Construction with rectangular, vertical sidewalls running tip to tail.
- Base: Sintered Factory Base, a very high-density sintered base.
- Profile: full camber, no rocker.
- Plate: R22 race plate pre-mounted; sold without bindings (Look SPX 12 Rockerace GW or SPX 15 Rockerace).
- Dimensions: 116-69-103 mm in all lengths; radius 12 m (155), 13 m (165), 14 m (170), 15 m (175).
- Weight: about 2.1 kg per ski at 165 cm with the plate, from 2.0 kg at 155 cm up to 2.3 kg at 175 cm.
Who it's for & comparisons
This is for masters racers, ex-racers and expert piste skiers who want a real slalom ski with an R22 plate but not the stiffness or price of a FIS Factory ski. Within Dynastar's own range, the Dynastar Speed 650 covers the same 11–14 m short-turn radius with a far lighter and more forgiving build for recreational carvers, and the Dynastar Speed race konect is the 75 mm all-round piste option. Across the group, the closest rival is the Rossignol Hero master st (66.5 mm, 11–14 m, 150–170 cm), effectively the Rossignol masters SL. The Salomon Equipe sl pro (68 mm, 10–14 m) and the Head Worldcup rebels e sl (68 mm, 10.5–13.7 m) are the other plate-mounted masters slalom skis to cross-shop.
Pros, cons and verdict
Pros
- Two full-length titanal sheets and a beech core for race-level edge grip.
- Full sidewalls and the R22 plate for direct power transmission.
- A 175 cm option for taller masters skiers.
Cons
- Around 2.1–2.3 kg per ski with plate; heavy to carry and swing all day.
- Bindings are not included and must be R22-compatible Look models.
- Full camber and two metal sheets demand speed and a strong, forward technique.
- Race-room price for the bare ski.
Verdict: The Speed Omeglass Master SL R22 is Dynastar's slalom ski for people who race for fun: real World Cup construction and plate, a 12–15 m radius that rewards quick feet, and a build the brand itself calls playful. If you want a forgiving short-turn carver, look at the Speed 650; if you need FIS homologation, step up to the Omeglass WC SL Factory.
