The Helio Carbon 102 is a do‑it‑all backcountry freerando ski aimed at riders who want a lightweight tool for long approaches and a confident ski on the descent. With a 102 mm waist it balances float in softer snow with enough edge contact for firm snow. If you favour long days in the hills, quick transitions between touring and skiing, and a lively feel on variable terrain, this ski delivers a strong mix of uphill efficiency and playful downhill performance without feeling overtly fragile.
Construction is poplar wood core with a pre‑preg carbon and fiberglass hybrid layup in a sandwich build and full‑perimeter ABS sidewalls. Tip widths (127–129 mm) and tail widths (115–117 mm) with tip and tail rocker increase flotation and ease of turn initiation; the 102 mm waist is a true all‑rounder for mixed snow. Sidecut radii (20–23 m depending on length) determine turn size and agility. Weight (approx. 1.4–1.6 kg per ski) matters for skinning; carbon provides torsional stiffness and dampness on the descent.
On snow the ski feels lively and confident. In pow it planes quickly thanks to the wide, rockered tip and a rocker tail that helps keep the tail from hooking; it floats better than a 92–95 mm piste ski and is still nimble. On firm or variable snow it maintains surprising edge hold for its weight because the carbon layup increases torsional stiffness, though it won’t match the sheer dampness of heavier, titanal‑reinforced big‑mountain skis. Overall it’s forgiving and fun in mixed conditions.
As a touring platform the weight is its headline benefit: listed pair weights of ~2.7–3.2 kg mean roughly 1.4–1.6 kg per ski depending on length. That makes long ascents and technical approaches less fatiguing. The ABS tail protector and integrated skin‑clip notch are practical touches for ski‑mountaineering. Choose a light, adjustable touring binding for uphill efficiency; if you plan aggressive high‑speed descents pick a sturdier binding and consider mounting position to prioritise control.
Compared with other lightweight ~102 mm freerando skis, the Helio Carbon 102 stands out for its carbon‑forward layup that keeps weight down while improving torsional stiffness. Trade‑offs include slightly less high‑speed composure and metal‑like dampness than heavier, fully metal‑laminate counterparts. In short, it’s an excellent choice for riders who prioritize uphill efficiency but still want a capable, confidence‑inspiring downhill ski — a balanced pick for long backcountry days rather than pure resort‑charged lines.
