The Tecton is a 600 g/binding pin binding with a lateral-toe release that brings tech-binding touring efficiency to a near-alpine descent feel. The Duke PT 16 is a ~1,050 g/binding alpine binding that detaches its toe for touring. They're both "hybrid" answers in the broad sense, but the philosophy gap is bigger than the spec gap.

Downhill: the Duke PT 16's alpine toe is in a different league

The Duke PT 16 runs Marker's Jester-derived alpine toe with full DIN-certified elastic travel and a DIN 16 ceiling. The Tecton's lateral-toe release is the closest pin binding feel to alpine — and it's excellent — but it's still a pin toe with smaller elastic envelope and lower DIN ceiling (13). For 90+ kg skiers, FWT-pace charging, or repeated heavy compressions, the Duke PT 16 has measurably more reserve. For most freeriders, the Tecton's descent feel is well within "alpine enough"; the Duke PT 16 exists for the skiers who specifically want more.

Touring: the Tecton is ~450 g/binding lighter on the climb

Tecton 13 weighs ~600 g/binding with brake; Duke PT 16 weighs ~1,050 g/binding uphill (with the alpine toe detached and carried in your pack). That ~900 g/pair gap is substantial. The transitions are also asymmetric — Tecton just flips a pin-up lever, Duke PT requires unscrewing the alpine toe with the included tool and bolting on the touring toe. If you tour 30+ days a year, the Tecton wins the climbing day; if you tour ~5 days a year and ski 80 resort days, the Duke PT's uphill friction barely matters.

Safety: the Duke PT 16's DIN/TÜV cert is the cleanest distinction

The Duke PT 16 is DIN/TÜV-certified ISO 5355 in alpine mode. The Tecton is tested to ISO 13992 — Fritschi states this explicitly — but not TÜV-certified (a common online error). For most freeriders the difference is academic; both release predictably. For race insurance, guides, or certification-required contexts, only the Duke PT 16 carries the third-party validation.

Versatility: the Duke PT 16 accepts alpine boots in alpine mode

The Duke PT 16's alpine toe is ISO 5355 + GripWalk; the touring toe is pin-only. The Tecton is pin-only across both modes. If you own both an alpine boot and a tech-insert boot and want them on the same ski, only the Duke PT 16 supports that workflow — though you give up some efficiency on tour days.

Durability: tied

Both are mature designs. Fritschi has refined the Tecton heel over three generations; Marker's Duke line has a reputation as bombproof as anything in freeride. Neither is the binding that fails.

Pick the Tecton 13 if your skiing leans tour-heavy (~25+ tour days/year), you weigh under ~90 kg, and you don't need TÜV certification. Pick the Duke PT 16 if you're 80% resort / 20% sidecountry, weigh 95+ kg or ski at DIN 13+, want alpine-boot compatibility, or need the certification. These two bindings aren't really competitors — they answer the same question for two genuinely different skiers.
