Overview

The Aroc is the newest line in Zag's range for 26/27: a stiff, strongly cambered all-mountain piste ski that sits next to the Mata in Zag's all-mountain family. Zag sums it up as "the harder you push, the more it grips" and aims it at skiers who come from alpine racing and want a resort ski that keeps the grip and precision they are used to. It is 124-85.5-108 mm in the 153 cm and grows to 128.5-87-112.5 mm in the 185 cm, with radii from 14.8 to 19.9 m across six lengths. Unlike the Mata ti there is no full titanal layer: the Aroc relies on a poplar core, multiaxial fiberglass and aluminium inserts in the tip and tail.

On-snow performance

On paper this is a ski for big, open groomers. Zag gives it 4/5 for hard snow and carving, 3/5 for pivoting and 2.5/5 for powder, and rates the flex at 5/5, the stiffest setting on its scale. The strong camber presses the whole edge into the snow and loads energy that comes back at the end of the turn, while the multi-radius sidecut combines a short radius underfoot with calmer tip and tail zones, so the ski can be pulled into a tighter arc without feeling nervous when it runs long. The 10% tip and tail rocker gives a little forgiveness at turn entry and in mixed snow, but Zag itself says the Aroc is best on hardpack and points riders who go off-piste often to the Slap 92 or Slap 100. Expect a ski that rewards an early, strong push on the front of the boot and feels less lively at low speed than the Mata.

Construction & specs explained

  • Core: poplar, chosen by Zag for response and durability.
  • Reinforcement: aluminium inserts at the tip and tail; no full metal laminate.
  • Laminates: multiaxial fiberglass for torsional and flexural stiffness.
  • Damping: an anti-vibration rubber insert.
  • Build: semi-cap sandwich with ABS sidewalls.
  • Shape: multi-radius sidecut with a short radius underfoot.
  • Profile: 10% tip rocker, 10% tail rocker, camber (Zag's FAQ calls it pronounced camber with slight rocker).
  • Flex: 5/5 (stiff); torsional stiffness described as excellent.
  • Dimensions: 124-85.5-108 mm (153 cm) to 128.5-87-112.5 mm (185 cm). Radius: 14.8 m (153) to 19.9 m (185).
  • Weight: 1,620 g (153) to 2,080 g (185) per ski. Lengths: 153, 160, 166, 173, 178, 185 cm.

Who it's for & comparisons

The Aroc is for strong intermediate to expert skiers, especially former racers, who spend most of their days on groomed slopes and want an 86-87 mm ski that holds an edge at speed. Inside Zag's range the Zag Mata ti is the more forgiving choice: 90 mm underfoot with titanal, medium camber and medium flex, so it enters turns more easily and tolerates imperfect technique; the Zag Slap 92 is the more playful all-rounder Zag recommends for skiers who leave the piste regularly. Among other brands the Rossignol Experience 86 ti is the closest match for a stiff, piste-first 86 mm ski, while the Salomon Stance 84 is a narrower, more accessible directional option with a similar on-piste focus.

Pros, cons and verdict

Pros

  • Stiff flex and strong camber for powerful edge grip on hardpack.
  • Multi-radius sidecut that works for both shorter and longer turns.
  • Six lengths from 153 to 185 cm.
  • No full titanal layer, yet aluminium inserts and a rubber damper keep it composed.

Cons

  • Demands a strong, committed skier; it is not forgiving at low speed.
  • Best on hard snow; limited float in fresh snow.
  • Heavier than its wood-and-glass construction suggests in the longer lengths.
  • Less playful and less pivoty than the Mata ti.

Verdict: The Zag Aroc is a stiff, cambered piste ski for skiers who want to drive hard on groomers with an 86-87 mm waist. Choose the Mata ti if you want the same width class with an easier, more forgiving character.
