Van Deer SL world cup — Review

Overview

The Van Deer SL World Cup is Marcel Hirscher's flagship slalom race ski, developed for FIS-legal competition at the highest level. Verified sidecut is 117-66-102 mm at 155 cm (11 m radius, 2010 g) and 118.5-67.5-103.5 mm at 165 cm (12.5 m radius, 2300 g). Two lengths only. Construction is a torsion box sandwich with an ash-poplar wood core, double layers of Titanal, prepreg composite layers, full ABS sidewalls, race edges, race base and Marcel's genuine race room finish.

On-snow performance

At 66-67.5 mm underfoot with double-Titanal race construction and FIS-legal geometry, the SL World Cup is an elite slalom race ski. Weights of 2010-2300 g place it in the top tier for hardpack race authority. Off piste is not a use case. On piste it responds to elite technique with explosive edge-to-edge agility and maximum edge grip on hard-packed slopes. Not intended for casual skiing; this is a race-tuned tool.

Construction & specs explained

Core: ash-poplar wood in a torsion box sandwich with double layers of Titanal and prepreg composite reinforcement. Full ABS sidewalls, race edges, race base with genuine race room finish. Sidecut 117-66-102 mm at 155 cm; 118.5-67.5-103.5 mm at 165 cm. Radius 11 m (155) and 12.5 m (165). Two lengths only. Marcel Hirscher-developed for World Cup slalom racing.

Who it's for & comparisons

Compared to the Head Worldcup rebels e sl pro the SL World Cup targets similar elite race athletes with a boutique construction approach. Against the Volkl Racetiger sl it is closer to a FIS-legal race ski than a consumer race carver. Compared to the Augment FIS WC GS it is a slalom-specific rather than GS shape.

Pros, cons and verdict

Pros

  • Verified full specs at both lengths (dimensions, radius, weight).
  • Double-Titanal torsion box construction delivers elite race authority.
  • FIS-legal geometry with Marcel Hirscher's design pedigree.
  • Race-tuned finish from Hirscher's own race room.

Cons

  • FIS-legal geometry unsuitable for anything other than slalom race training or competition.
  • Only two lengths (155, 165 cm) — no options for smaller or taller athletes.
  • Elite race flex demands top-tier technique and fitness.
  • Very high boutique pricing reflecting handmade construction.

Verdict: Marcel Hirscher's flagship FIS-legal slalom race ski for elite athletes and masters racers who want his construction and race room finish. Not a resort ski — expect race intent throughout.
