Overview
The Head Discovery 74 is the entry point to the 74 mm shape in Head's new 26/27 Discovery family, sitting below the Discovery 74 sport and the 74 pro. It shares their 128/74/109 mm sidecut, Allride Rocker profile, five-length run and 9.1–15.0 m radius spread, but Head builds it around a lightweight synthetic core rather than wood composite, leaves out the Graphene layer and pairs it with a PR 11 GW system binding (a PR 10 GW Promo version is also offered). Head's badges read Beginner, All Mountain, Slow and Short Radius — "progression is the focus", in the brand's own words.
On-snow performance
On paper this is the gentlest of the three 74s. A synthetic core is lighter and softer than wood composite, so the Discovery 74 should bend into a turn with very little input and forgive a backseat stance; Head's Auxetic Tech still stiffens the structure under pressure, which is what separates it from a plain foam-core rental ski — the harder you push, the more support it gives back. The short radius (13.0 m at 170 cm, 9.1 m at 149 cm) keeps turns round and frequent, the 15 % tip rocker helps the tip initiate and ride over soft bumps, and the 85 % camber keeps enough edge on the snow for the moderate speeds Head designs it for. Expect it to feel calm and predictable rather than lively; Head rates it "Slow", and the construction backs that up.
Construction & specs explained
Core: Head's lightweight Superframe synthetic core. The Superframe construction — a fully wrapped fibreglass structure — adds torsional strength and spreads pressure along the ski, and Auxetic Tech (a structure that expands in width when stretched in length) pushes against it so the ski stiffens as it flexes. The base is UHM C and the inclined Better Balance Base gives a constant ramp angle for all boot sole sizes. The difference to the 74 sport, going only by what Head publishes: the Sport has a wood composite core and Graphene and is listed as PROTECTOR ready with the PROTECTOR EVO PR 11 GW as an option; the Discovery 74 has the synthetic core, no Graphene listing, and PR 11 GW or PR 10 GW Promo bindings. Lengths 149, 156, 163, 170 and 177 cm; sidecut 128/74/109 mm in every length; radius 9.1 / 10.2 / 11.3 / 13.0 / 15.0 m; Head quotes 1515 g per ski without binding at 170 cm — lighter than the 1610 g Sport. Rocker 15 % tip, 85 % camber.
Who it's for & comparisons
A first-ski buyer or returning skier who wants a predictable, forgiving piste ski with a modern progressive flex and a complete binding package, and who does not plan to chase high speeds. Versus the Discovery 74 sport it saves money and a little weight, but gives up the wood composite core and the PROTECTOR option. The Rossignol Forza 20d is the same idea from Rossignol — a short-radius 74 mm system ski for beginners; the Salomon S max 8 is a narrower, slightly more carving-minded alternative; the Atomic Redster q5 is a step up in stability for someone who already skis red runs confidently.
Pros, cons and verdict
Pros
- Very forgiving: synthetic core, short radius and Auxetic progressive flex.
- Light at 1515 g per ski (170 cm), easy to carry and to steer.
- Five lengths from 149 to 177 cm.
- PR 11 GW GripWalk system binding included.
- Lowest price of the three 74 mm Discovery models.
Cons
- Synthetic core and "Slow" rating — strong or fast skiers will outgrow it quickly.
- No Graphene and no PROTECTOR-ready listing, unlike the 74 sport.
- System PowerRail base limits binding choice and rules out touring.
- 74 mm waist is for groomers and shallow snow only.
Verdict: An honest beginner's piste ski with Head's progressive-flex technology at the lowest Discovery 74 price; the 74 sport is worth the extra only if you expect to progress quickly or want the PROTECTOR binding.
