The Salomon Shift2 13 and CAST Freetour 2.0 are both convertible hybrids — alpine toe down, tech toe up — but they take opposite engineering paths. The Shift2 is one binding that transforms; the CAST is a system that swaps Look Pivot 15 (or 18) alpine toes for tech-pin toes you carry in your pack.
Downhill: CAST has the Pivot heel advantage
The CAST runs a Look Pivot 15 or 18 heel underneath, which is the freeride-binding reference standard — seven-bushing turntable design, deep elastic travel, and the release behavior that has dominated Freeride World Tour podiums for two decades. The Shift2's heel is purpose-built for the platform; it's a strong alpine heel but it's not a Pivot. If your downhill is no-compromise, big-mountain, hard-charging skiing, the CAST is the better tool. The Shift2's downhill is excellent for 90% of skiers; the CAST exists for the remaining 10%.
Touring: the Shift2 stays on the ski
The biggest practical gap is the transition. The Shift2 flips its toe wings up and you're skinning — 30 seconds, nothing carried. The CAST requires you to unscrew (with the included tool) and stash both alpine toes in your pack, then bolt on two tech-pin toes. At the top you reverse the process. It's a several-minute transition, and you carry 4 toe pieces total (2 on the ski, 2 in your pack) on every tour day. CAST is also heavier on the climb (~1000 g/binding with the tech toe, ~1525 g downhill).
Versatility: the Shift2's single toe takes more boots
Shift2 accepts ISO 5355 alpine, ISO 23223 GripWalk, and ISO 9523 touring soles in the same toe. CAST in alpine mode is Look Pivot — alpine + GripWalk only; the tech toe requires pin-insert boots. Same boot-swap story as the Duke PT comparison, with more parts.
Safety: the CAST's Pivot heel has more elastic envelope
Both are DIN/TÜV-certified in alpine mode — the credentials are at parity. The difference is in release engineering. The CAST runs Look Pivot heels, whose seven-bushing turntable design gives the largest elastic-travel envelope in the alpine binding world (the catalog spec lists 45 mm toe / 28 mm heel). The Shift2's alpine heel is excellent — purpose-built around the platform — but it doesn't match the Pivot's raw elastic margin under repeated heavy compression. For freeride-competition pace, hucks with flat landings, or 95 kg+ skiers, the CAST has more measured reserve before pre-release. For everyday freeride within DIN 13, the gap is small in practice.
Durability: CAST's Pivot edges ahead
The Look Pivot's metal-heavy construction is among the most durable bindings ever made — many run them for 10+ seasons. Shift2's plastic-and-metal composite housing is reliable but won't outlast a Pivot.
Pick by your downhill standard
Pick the Shift2 13 if you tour regularly, want a one-piece transition, and your downhill is freeride-but-not-FWT-level. Pick the CAST Freetour 2.0 if your downhill demands a Pivot heel — competition freeride, big-mountain comps, or you've skied Pivots for years and won't switch — and you accept the multi-piece transition. The CAST's freeride downhill is a step above the Shift2; the cost is touring friction.
